Sri Lanka is such a popular tourism destination for people on adventure holidays that demand for accommodation is outstripping supply.
That is according to the south-east Asian nation's minister of external affairs, who explained that it has "found its way out of the woods" following a troubled past and is now a safe and exciting place to visit.
Professor G L Peiris explained: "Tourism is the most visible growth area of the Sri Lankan Republic.
"In fact, the truth is that we do not have hotel rooms in sufficient quantities to offer the very large number of tourists that are coming to Sri Lanka. So that is evidence that people feel safe."
He was speaking after preliminary figures from the Pacific Asia Travel Association indicated that more people are visiting the entire region and Sri Lanka in particular.
The country enjoyed year-on-year growth of 46 per cent in international visitor numbers during the month of January, with South Asia as a whole enjoying the strongest growth in arrivals from across the entire Asia-Pacific region.
