Solo holidays to Turkish city could take in jazz or opera performances
Travellers with a penchant for listening to music in different countries should plan a solo holiday to Istanbul in July, as two festivals dedicated to the celebration of different styles of music will be held in the city.
From the first day of the month until the 19th, the annual International Istanbul Jazz Festival will be held in venues across the city. In the past, this festival has welcomed such luminaries of the genre as Ray Charles, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Running concurrently with the jazz festival will be the International Istanbul Opera Festival, which runs for a couple of extra days, finishing on July 21st.
Famous institutions from across Turkey - such as the State Opera and Ballet - and Europe will be appearing at the celebration of opera, which will be held at a range of venues including Topkapi Palace.
Topkapi Palace was the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans up until 1856, when Sultan Abdul Mecid the First moved this function to the Dolmabahce Palace, also in Istanbul.
