Travellers drawn to the 'history, culture and location' of Istanbul

Istanbul is a great city for people on solo holidays

Istanbul is one of those cities which everyone has on their list of places to visit at least once on a solo holiday, according to the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office.

Joanna Marsh, a spokeswoman for the tourism body, noted that what attracted people to the Turkish city was "not just the history and culture but also the location at the meeting point of Europe and Asia. These days too it is a really vibrant cosmopolitan city with some great restaurants and night-life".

According to passenger traffic figures, published by ACI Europe, both Istanbul IST and Istanbul SAW airports saw an increase in passengers for March 2011, when compared to March 2010.

"One of the amazing things about Istanbul is the contrast between the ancient and modern aspects of the city. I would recommend getting a good balance of both," Ms March said.

She suggested that whilst in the city, people should head to such attractions as Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, Museum of Modern Art and traditional Turkish baths.
