Award-winning writer extols the benefits of adventure holidays
Award-winning writer Paul Theroux has said that one of the best elements of travel is the relative solitude that can be taken from it, a solitude which is all too rare in today's world.
The author, who was talking to Reuters about his latest book, The Tao of Travel, said that the experience of travelling is important to people's mental health, as it represents a microcosm of everything.
Mr Theroux - who won the Whitbread Prize in 1978 for his novel Picture Palace - said that travel "is like going through life, the average difficult trip is like living a life, overcoming obstacles".
"The kind of solitude that people once knew as travellers is disappearing because people in general are so well connected," he said.
"But that solitude is a valuable thing, it allows you to meditate, consider where you are."
Hiking holidays and adventure holidays are the best ways to get much-needed solitude out of travel. Walking trips in particular give people a time to think and "consider where [they] are".
