Health benefits of walking holidays are 'becoming more clearly defined'
E-mail Print

Expert says it can guard against many diseases

The health benefits of hiking holidays - and walking in general - are becoming "more clearly defined" according to an expert on the activity.

Mark Sutcliffe, who is the editor of Go Walking Magazine, used his editorial letter in the most recent issue to extol the health benefits of walking and trekking.

Mr Sutcliffe pointed to several studies showing how good the activity is for people, saying it helps guard against osteoporosis, depression and Type 2 diabetes.

"The health benefits of walking are becoming ever more clearly defined," he wrote.

"Simply setting foot in a green natural environment has been proven to lower blood pressure and taking just five brisk 30-minute walks a week is enough to keep your cardiovascular system in fine fettle."

Mr Sutcliffe's comments echo those of Emma Soames, editor-at-large for Saga Magazine, who recently said that walking is "the best kind of exercise for any generation".
