Travellers can 'lose themselves' during adventure holidays in Melbourne

Many of Melbourne's gems are hidden away in the city's backstreets

Travellers can lose themselves in the back streets of Melbourne during an adventure holiday in Australia, according to a travel writer.

Robert Bevan, writing for the Guardian, claimed many of the best parts of the city are hidden away in narrow alleys, which the locals refer to as 'laneways'.

He said: "The more hidden the location, the greater the cred when it comes to Melbourne's laneway denizens.

"Many of these alley cafes, bars and galleries don't have a sign and the tiny streets they sit on sometimes don't bother either. Just remember, the more dumpsters to negotiate, the better it is."

Among the many bars and restaurants located among these laneways, Mr Bevan recommends visitors take a trip to the Sista Bella bar and the Japanese sushi restaurant Izakaya Den.

Film-lovers can enjoy a unique cinematic experience and go and see a cult-classic movie at the Rooftop Cinema and bar on the 7th floor of art nouveau building Curtin House.
