Canoeing the Ardèche River
No trip to the Ardèche is complete without canoeing down the great river; we spend the first morning exploring the canyon and its wildlife, beaches and caves. Our guide will help you paddle the long calm stretches and navigate the small rapids before reaching Pont d'Arc - a naturally formed giant limestone bridge over the water. There is further opportunity later in the week to canoe much further along the river - a journey of 24km where the canyon walls rise a staggering 300m above the water.
Cycling, Walking & Horse Riding
We explore the surrounding countryside both on bikes and on foot. The area was a French resistance stronghold and we'll visit historical villages as well as local markets and farms. We have picnics at panoramic viewpoints and at our favourite spot, hidden in the forest at the mouth of a deep cave. The Ardèche is also well-known for horse riding along (and in!) the river and is suitable for those with no previous riding experience (optional).
Culture, Caves & Time to Relax
We visit the famous Roman aqueduct at le Pont du Gard and also go to Avignon - the 'City of the Popes' - a modern day cultural capital full of magnificent medieval buildings, bridges and monuments. Back at base, there is also the option to try the aerial ropes course and we visit a cave with a series of amazing caverns over 180m underground! There will be time to practice your French and try local foods and plenty of free time for swimming, sun bathing or relaxing in the cafés.
Comment
An action packed, multi-activity holiday. No experience is needed for any activities although you do need to be reasonably fit to enjoy the week. As a centre based trip, you can do as little or as much as you like.
