Parc National de Volcans
Without doubt one of the world's greatest wildlife experiences, the focus of our tour is a close encounter with wild mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Virunga Massif. Tracking on foot through dense undergrowth we enter the misty bamboo forest and lush jungle with the chatter of golden monkeys and the call of turraco birds as we search for these rare and magnificent primates. It was here that American primatologist Dian Fossey lived and died in her efforts to protect them and it remains a unique privilege to observe these gentle giants as they eat, play, groom and rest in their natural habitat.

Virunga Mountains & Iby'iwacu
There is also time on our short visit to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Virunga mountain chain and explore the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, as well as learn more about Rwanda's recent turbulent history in the capital, Kigali. We also include a unique stay at Iby'iwacu cultural village, an initiative designed to improve the livelihood of communities around the Parc National des Volcans and reduce their dependence on the gorilla's habitat. During our stay we are able to learn more about the project and get to know the villagers, gaining an insight into their everyday life.

Comment

Come prepared for demanding walking/trail conditions in Parc National des Volcans. Tracking gorillas in dense undergrowth can be quite a challenge and whilst wildlife can never be guaranteed, sightings are usually possible. With no major time difference, Rwanda is an ideal destination for an exotic weekend avoiding jet-lag.
