Trip Summary

The tiny and remote kingdom of Bhutan is a unique country that has retained much of its traditional heritage and cultural purity amidst the spectacular landscapes of the Himalayas. This extraordinary journey takes us deep into the heart of this Shangri-La, to explore its fertile valleys and sumptuous monasteries as we journey across a landscape that has remained relatively untroubled by the incursions of modern life for centuries. Although joining in Kathmandu we save our explorations here for the end of the trip and fly to Paro, a town set in the serene wooded landscapes of Western Bhutan. From here we venture across mountain trails that lie strewn with prayer flags and isolated communities, visiting the dzongs and valleys around Punakha and learning more about the lives of the people in this rural area before continuing on to the serene tranquillity of the Phobjika Valley. We will visit the remarkable temple of the ‘mad monk’ at Chimmi Lhagang and cross the wintering grounds of the rare black-necked cranes amongst the craggy landscapes of the Black Mountains. Then we head for Bhutan’s engaging capital of Thimpu, a city that even today vigorously resists the intrusion of the modern age. We will get an opportunity to visit a traditional Thangka painting workshop or a paper making factory and wander through timeless landscapes dotted with villages and terraces of rice and apple orchards. Back in Paro we will have an opportunity to hike to the precariously located ‘Tiger’s Nest’ Monastery. At the end of our trip we will fly back to Nepal for a chance to explore the highlights of the Kathmandu Valley and the option to take an early morning flight over the Himalaya before the journey home.
