The Makgadikgadi pan
The Boteti River snakes its way across the Kalahari Desert. Until 30 000 years ago this area was an enormous inland sea that dried up but today the Boteti River experiences periods of drought and of plentiful water. The Makgadikgadi pan is also a remnant of an enormous lake fed by the waters of central Africa but these days the pan only fills in years of exceptional rainfall. The summer months are great for birding and in the winter months the migration of wildebeest and zebra to the area with the attendant predators such as lion and cheetah create great game-viewing. Day and night vehicle safaris are a feature, together with walking safaris. Visits to Nxai Pan, Baine’s baobabs and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve can also be arranged.
