Overview

Magical Kyrenia
Without doubt, Kyrenia is the ideal base for exploration due to its central (and beautiful) location. The harbour is one of the most attractive anywhere in the Mediterranean, dominated by its Byzantine castle and backed by a 1000m high 'Besparmark' (Five Fingers) mountain range - it is the perfect place to while away the evening. We take ancient paths from the hillside village of Bellapais and its famous monastery and up to Buffavento Castle from where we walk to the highest point on Northern Cyprus before descending back through the Besparmak range.

Famagusta & Salamis
Another of our trips takes us to the fascinating 'Incirli' (fig) cave, Kantara Castle and finally down to the sea at Kaplica Beach. A free day in the middle of the tour gives us the opportunity to explore the city of Famagusta and surrounding area, including the ruined city of Salamis (optional). In Famagusta, Crusader, Venetian and Ottoman architecture reflects the legacy of previous invaders and the strategic position of Cyprus over the centuries. The city is home to some of the most impressive medieval architecture in the Mediterranean whilst further north the ruined Graeco-Roman city of Salamis is testament to a history stretching back at least a further millennia before.

Village to Village Trails
For centuries the high mountains have been a place of refuge and fortification and our final couple of days of walking take us along local paths that have been used for centuries to link small villages scattered along the Besparmak range. Life here is far from easy but the villagers have always got time to stop and talk and extend a warm welcome to walkers. Each evening we return to our comfortable hotel where you can swim in the pool before enjoying some of the locally grown food.

Tour Highlights

  •  Kyrenia - Visit this picturesque harbour town. Enjoy wandering the backstreets or take a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants
  • Bellapais Abbey - Explore this twelfth century Crusader abbey, and pretty village setting, once home to Lawrence Durrell
  • Crusader Castles - Take quiet mountain paths to Buffavento Castle at Northern Cyprus' highest point, and Kantara Castle on the north coast
  • Mountain Villages - Follow ancient paths through the Besparmak Mountains to local villages
  • Local Food - Enjoy the fresh Mediterranean flavours of mezes and other local dishes

What we say

Mel-BuddStaff Member Mel Budd travelled on this tour in 2011.

"Great walks leading to magnificent castles with spectacular views, spring flowers, pine forests and quiet villages.  This is the perfect tour to see Northern Cyprus and would be a great introduction to walking tours."
