Detailed Trip Notes

Suitability

Suitability

We've given each of our tours a comfort rating and a tour pace, walking or cycling grade to give you a general idea about the level of activity on each tour and the standard of accommodation you will be staying in at the end of your day's adventure.

Often you'll stay in different styles of accommodation during your tour; so we make an average rating across the entire tour.  For more information on where you'll stay each night, please refer to the day by day tour itinerary.

Preparing for your tour

Climate

Despite the northern latitudes the climate in Norway is not extreme, due to the affects of the North Atlantic Drift. Between May and September is the best time to visit this region, with summer temperatures reaching the high teens and rain a regular feature year round along the coast. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set between the middle of May and the end of July, so you can expect to encounter the midnight sun during this period.

Packing for your tour

To assist with packing for your tour, we have detailed some of the essential items you should take with you.

Luggage

Unfortunately it does occasionally happen that luggage does not always reach its destination on the same flight as its owner, or possibly it may be damaged in transit. If you are unlucky enough for this to occur, it is important that you file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) with the airline before leaving the airport. This is essential when you come to make a claim either against the airline or from your travel insurance company

One main piece and a daysac. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Remember, you are expected to carry your own luggage – so don’t overload yourself.

Clothing

Light and medium clothes are needed, including a warm sweater and windproof outer garment, as the weather can vary considerably on a daily basis. Raingear is essential at any time. Evenings, nights and early mornings can be cold at the beginning and end of the season. Other items that may prove useful are gloves, a warm hat and lightweight thermals.

Footwear

Waterproof boots with good ankle support, plus casual shoes for the evenings.

Equipment

A torch, water bottle, binoculars, good quality sunglasses and a lip salve with sun protection are all essential. You may also wish to bring seasickness tablets for the whale watching.

General Information

Please note:

We cannot guarantee whales sightings, as it is almost impossible to predict what the season may bring in terms of weather and animal activity, but we are confident that every day will be an adventure. Last season, 96% of groups saw sperm whales and of these groups, 30-40% of them saw different species of whales and dolphins in addition to sperm whales. If on the first sailing you don’t see any whales then, time and weather conditions allowing, you may go on another sailing for free. Should weather conditions on the open sea prove to be unsuitable then we can change the itinerary around to cruise through the Vestbygd Oksnes Fjord or explore Anda Island looking for birds and seals. Please note that previous whale sightings cannot be used to predict what future whale sightings will be like. As most of the trips are at sea and weather dependent, our itinerary has been left as flexible as possible to take best advantage of good conditions and maximise your enjoyment of the tour.

This tour will not be accompanied by an Explore tour leader. Instead you will have a tour representative. The tour representative will not be with you for every section of the tour and will not stay at the accommodation at night or eat out with the group every evening. However they will be available for you during the included activities and will help if any problems occur.
