It is difficult to choose the highlight of this trip as I thoroughly enjoyed it all.   A great itinerary has been put together which meant that we experienced and enjoyed many of the different landscapes that Chile had to offer.  First stop was the desert where the best parts were watching flamingoes at sunset on the salt lake and seeing the most incredible stars in the sky in the evenings.  The Lake District was particularly beautiful when we visited with absolutely perfect weather giving amazing views of the many volcanoes (some active) as we flew over when we first arrived and of the Osorno volcano from the town of Puerto Varas once we had arrived.   The South was blustery but did not prevent us from visiting the penguins on Magellan Island (I never expected to see so many) and from walking in the stunningly beautiful Torres del Paine National Park.  We ended the trip on Easter Island which was an incredible experience from start to finish.  I had not appreciated that it was a beautiful tropical island as well as having so much history and culture to learn about.      The trip involves a lot of flying (11 flights in three weeks if you come from the UK) but LAN Chile were so efficient that this was not a problem with every one of our internal flights being either on time or arriving early at the destination.  Most stops were for either two or three nights so although there was a lot of travelling it was did not matter so much because there was a decent amount of time spent at every destination.  The hotels were also generally of good quality, although the one in the desert is quite a long walk out of town which was a bit of a pain.  The tour leader was excellent and made sure that the arrangements worked like clockwork.      The only thing that you should be aware of on this trip is that the optional activities make up most of the highlights of the trip and you are likely to want to do most or all of them (and in some cases there is nothing else to do if you don't).  This makes the trip significantly more expensive than the base price as the optionals came to well over $600.  We were also expected to tip separately for the optional trips which doubled the amount that we had set aside for tips.  Chile is a very expensive country but if you go prepared for that it would be hard not to have a fantastic time.
