What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

"They are indeed endless!
The warm sunshine as you walk around the wall of old city of Dubrovnik
Wind in my hair as I cycle around Mljet National Park around aqua blue lakes that echo back at you with their reflection in the water.
Cycling through Cavtat valley whilst stopping to nibble on fresh figs."

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

"Jakov Milicevic was a treat, a bundle of passion, a wealth of knowledge and man can he cycle!   His smile and warm ways delighted all of us, each and every day."

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"Top 5 Tips:
1.   Don't miss out on going up the bell tower in Korcula
2.   Beautiful walk not to missed in Split which give full coast views of the city,
only takes a couple hours and it's free
3.   The grilled calamari and Croatia ice creams is a delight not to be missed
4.   Take the time to stop at the vineyards whilst cycling to indulge in their local wines, so say the "whites" are better, but I loved the reds, and the Cherry Brandy is a treat too
5.   If the fresh figs grow over onto the roadside they are free for picking and eating. Yummy!"

Do you have anything else to add?

"Great trip for those who like the sunshine, fresh air and lots of swimming & cycling."

Trip notes were inaccurate - i.e. no need to pack helmets as these are provided  Flight times very poor - we arrived at 11pm on the first Saturday and had to get up at 3 am for a 6.30 am flight home the following Saturday thereby losing a day's holiday. This is not an 8 day trip it is in fact a 6 day trip.   The Old Timer boat is in need of an upgrade. The accommodation is very basic and tired looking. The cabins are tiny and the doors do not shut/lock properly. There is no sound proofing so all noises can be heard around the cabin areas. There are gaps above the doors between the doors and the ceiling in the corridor area so loud conversations/snoring can be heard! The toilets are upstairs as are the showers so in the night you will need to go on deck to visit the facilities but I was impressed that apart from one day we had hot water for showers every day.

You will need to be very agile on this trip as often the boat could not moor beside the quayside but was moored off shore alongside other boats. This then entailed us having to cross between boats to get to shore but as each boat was at a different height and the gaps between the boats often quite wide it caused a few of us concern. If you are short like me this caused an issue and on at least one occasion I did not think I could actually get on/off the boat as I could not physically step/jump across the gap to the other boat.  The cycling is graded easy and 'flat'. None of the routes are flat and the ride on the last day is quite challenging. If you are a confident cyclist you should be fine but some of the routes entail cycling through busy towns and main roads to reach the countryside. The ride on the last day is about 20 miles and entails a 1 hour uphill climb at the start, The whole trip is about 4.5 to 5 hours long with quite a few hills and can involve an off road section which as a less confident cyclist I found tough. Fellow holiday makers rated this trip as moderate not easy for cycling.  Our final night entailed us being moored 4 boats away from the quayside and a 4am start to catch our flight at Dubrovnik. This meant that in the dark we were having to cross across 4 boats (see my comments above) and move our luggage likewise across 4 boats to the quayside. It was do able but not ideal.  On a more positive note the guide and crew were fantastic. They all worked incredibly hard to make our trip fun and interesting. All the overnight stops were in lovely harbours and the cycle routes took you through some lovely countryside. The Croatian Islands are very lush and green and well worth a visit.

Our response

Thank you for your comment on the cycling helmets – we have updated the Trip Notes to indicate that these can be provided for those who do not wish to bring their own.

We are sorry you feel that the tour was wrongly described as an 8 day break.  In line with industry standards, we count the number of days in the holiday as being from when the first service is provided to when the last finishes.  This also ensures that those passengers who need to book sufficient time off work have the information they need to do so with confidence.  We are always happy to give the flight departure times before a booking is made.

This is an old-fashioned boat and we use it because it fits the Explore ethos. Most of the time is spent on deck and the cabins are only intended for sleeping. We have tried to give a full description of the conditions to be expected on board in our Be Prepared paragraph on the Trip Notes.  All boats in a busy area will find it necessary sometimes to moor beyond others, which have to be crossed to reach the quay.  This is not usually a problem – our Family tour customers can be as young as 7, and get across comfortably.

We will keep the cycling grade under review – we always monitor all comments on activity levels for walking and cycling as it is important to us to meet customer expectations.  At the moment we have a few comments suggesting that the cycling is too easy, as well as a few saying the opposite!

Thank you for your kind comments on the tour leader, crew, and the places visited – we appreciate this.
