What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

My highlight was probably seeing The Terracotta Army. I remember reading about the discovery in the press and never dreamt I'd actually see the figures for real. The scale of the site is immense, and I really liked the fact that the excavation is still going on and you can see evidence of it .

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

The tour leader on our 'Walking The Great Wall ' tour was Peter Ling. He had an indepth knowledge of the history of China and especially the Wall, and informed us before each visit in an interesting way. He was personable and had very good people skills with all the members of the varied group.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"I would say make sure you take enough warm clothing for the Walking the Wall extension trip, if you are going at this time of the year( October ). Even though it was 29 degs in Southern China, and probably 20 degs in Northern China in the day, the early mornings and evenings were cold enough to warrant hats gloves and padded jackets!
Definitely go and see the optional Light show -impressions, at Yangshuo. It's sensational and a must!"

Do you have anything else to add?

I thoroughly enjoyed the diversity of this amazing tour, and feel I now have an insight  into the emerging China we read about in the press. I liked the fact that even though your itineraries are detailed we were sometimes surprised by things that happened- eg the speed boats that took us across the lake at Panijakou ( it felt like a Bond movie), when I was expecting a cruise boat.

What a vast and varied country- completely different from what we had been expecting. The types of scenery, modes of transport used, architecture viewed, colours seen, flavours tasted and sounds heard were, in many ways, a great and rewarding surprise. A photographers delight, at times almost too much to take in. Every new day was anticipated eagerly, early morning risers only on this trip. The Chinese people and particularly our local guides were always available, keen and eager to answer our questions and they were always smiling. The obvious tourist attractions were fantastic as you would expect but there were also extras not to be missed - the Beijing Opera that turned into an acrobatics show, the dumpling banquet where they come in all flavours and shapes, a tandem ride through the countryside and the peace and tranquility of a cup of tea (choose from 11 flavours) after visiting a busy highlight, the terracotta warriors. Thank you for a fabulous holiday which we shall recommend to all our friends. (HCW- 29th August 2010)
