How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Eugene was an excellent tour leader, very patient, with good sense of humour, kind and helpful.  He is an asset to the company and I would like to recommend him for your "good tour leader award"

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Keep an open mind with regard to living conditions of locals and especially at the home stay.  The locals are very friendly and happy to chat.  Its nice to take a few oddments for the kids in the villages they are very appreciative of simple things.

Do you have anything else to add?

The tour was made even better because of Eugene.  I would have no hesitation in recommending this tour.

Very efficient, friendly, patient and generally nice

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Check out the group flight - do you really want to have a 6 hour transit in Abu Dhabi on the return flight?   There's an alternative.

Do you have anything else to add?

A gentle, non-challenging holiday in lovely surroundings

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Good but promises didn't always materialise and there was some deviation from tour notes which were never explained.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

It is a very leisurely tour and the trip note descriptions are somewhat romanticised. Most importantly check flight times. The group flight had a 7 hour wait in Abu Dhabi on way back whereas most people had booked Emirates flights which were cheaper and got home before we left Abu Dhabi - not good customer care from Explore. Trip notes also out of date re departure tax from Trivandrum. It was abolished some time ago.

Our response

Thank you for informing us that departure tax from Trivandrum is no longer required for passengers.  I have informed our Operations Manager who is responsible for our tours in this region.

Depending on the time when a customer books, flight availability can change. It is of course always possible to book any of our holidays on a Land Only basis, however many of our customers prefer to be ATOL protected.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The energy of the country and the lovely countryside. The backwaters were lovely and peaceful.

Eugene organised our events well and we visited his lovely father and sisters to learn to cook.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Prepare for all weathers. We played in the sea in sunshine and rain. The nature reserve can be very muddy as well - and we saw elephants!

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Drinking Toddy at sunset on back of our houseboat. It was made truly memorable because the todd was bllody horrible. View was gorgeous though - Surreaal experience.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Watching sun set over Kochi and chinese fishing nets as we sat on sea front veranda eating our lobster , which probably only came to £5 each with wine.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Excellent as all our guides have been through India.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

This is very different to North India, here we didn't see any beggars and the local population are friendly without imposing themselves seeking favour.

Do you have anything else to add?

Be wary of Daphne's advice in previous review The Malaria Watch and IHO keep changing their minds over malaria in Souh India.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

We loved the time spent on the backwaters, just gliding through the emerald green waterways, with glimpses of timeless village life - women washing clothes, children swimming and men shepherding ducks across the water or collecting sand from the depths. Everyone smiled and waved as we went by. We were impressed by the facilities on the boat - we even had our own en suite! We also enjoyed the homestay on the backwaters - the family were very welcoming - the two grown-up children spoke excellent English and taught us to play a typical Indian board game - we lost, of course! The house was on the edge of a rice field, with goats and chickens running around the garden. It was a real village atmosphere.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

He had a great sense of humour and always had a smile for us.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

We are a retired couple who are not particularly fit and we found this to be a very relaxing tour - perfect for soaking up the calm and tranquility of Kerala. An added bonus was that we didn't need malaria tablets for Kerala. Don't forget to bring back some of the famous spices of the region, including black pepper, cardamon and nutmeg, which you can see growing up in the hills.

Do you have anything else to add?

If you have never been to India this would be a perfect introduction to the country. The people are very friendly and live life in the slow lane. The whole experience is much calmer than in some other parts of India - perfect for chilling out and just enjoying this beautiful country.

I loved every day of this holiday. Kerala is a hidden jewel I had not even heard of a year before our trip. Of all the highlights, my favourite things were the three days relaxing on the backwaters (it was like being in paradise) and trying the local food (which was so full of flavour and not nearly as spicy as I was expecting - probably dampened down for westerners!). Our tour guide and driver really added to the experience and were both fun and knowledgable.

Highlights - Kerala Backwaters on the boat. Tea plantations. Unexpected. - We had a very long flight home via The Maldives. We had to stay on the plane for an hour on The Maldives runway. Throughout the booking procedure I was never informed that we would be stopping at The Maldives. All my Explore paperwork made no mention of this. So it felt like Explore had been rather underhand in this matter. (KB - 11th January 2011)

Highlights were the houseboat, homestay and cooking demonstration/meal at the tour leader's family home. (KB- 30th November 2010)

Waking up to the sounds of the Arabian Sea outside the hotel was a good start, relaxing on the boat whilst sailing through the backwaters was making it heavenly. Fantastic time playing with the kids at the home stay then checking you had no leeches in your socks at Periyar- this tour was so chilled and fun, it was the perfect unwinding holiday. If you fancy trying some toddy, learning to make a curry and maybe even trying your hand at Chinese net fishing in Fort Kochi this is a fantastic trip. They call Kerala God's Own Country - it certainly is! (KB- 1st December 2008)
