| This was our first visit to Central America and we were impressed with the Maya ruins and the colonial cities we visited. The ruin sites were much more physically demanding that what the itinerary seemed to suggest. At most sites there was lots of climbing up and down pyramids and temples on steep stone steps - a hiking pole with rubber tip was a great help for this. At Tikal the guide told us we would be walking 5 miles through the site, most of which was jungle trails and again up and down temples. At most of the sites there were very few other visitors until we got to Chichen Itza and Tulum. Our guide, Ana, was brilliant getting us up and into Chichen Itza first thing in the morning when it opened. By the time we'd finished the site the hordes of tourists from Cancun and the cruise ships were decending on the site. Tulum was the biggest 'tourist trap' and the few ruins there were interesting but not really a "must see" place. We enjoyed our first visit to Central America and would recommend this tour to anyone, just be prepared for some sometimes strenuous activitiy at some of the Maya sites. |
