What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Most trips to Greece offer multiple days of sailing and island hopping (which are fantastic), but without much opportunity to see mainland Greece beyond Athens. This trip (though no island hopping was included) was a fantastic blend of everything Greece has to offer: History, culture, cuisine, beautiful scenery, museums, picturesque villages, some beach time, chances to get some exercise through hikes/walks/ascents to fortresses, and opportunities for relaxation and time on your own to take in the Mediterranean sunshine. Bus time from location to location was not terrible (the longest ride may have been 4 hours), and our guide, Neil, made the journeys go quickly with interesting stories and hand outs of the places we'd be visiting.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Neil was FANTASTIC! As mentioned, he entertained us with stories and historical accounts of many of the places we'd be seeing. He was helpful, positive, polite, and funny. He would organize group dinners, but not every night which was appreciated. On my last morning he woke up at 3AM to walk with me to the bus depot to ensure I was safely on the bus to the airport! (VERY much appreciated)

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"Don't expect to go to the Parthenon and take pictures without hundreds of tourists in the way! ;-)

Other than that...If you feel that a visit to Greece would not be complete without some island hopping, add that time to the end of your trip as a nice, relaxing wrap up to seeing mainland Greece. Unfortunately I was not able to add another week to a 13 day holiday, so what I did was book two early nights in Athens before trip commencement and found an all day tour from Athens to the local islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS - the ruins at Aegina were STUNNING and worth a visit."

Do you have anything else to add?

Oftentimes group trips are enhanced by having wonderful companions with whom you've shared the experience. I was fortunate to have a great group of travelmates on this trip. Two weeks later, I'm still on a post-vacation high. :-)

I booked this trip to visit the famous sites of ancient Greece (Epidaurus, Olympia, Delphi, Mycenea) and I was not disappointed, we saw them all with plenty of time to walk around, take photos, and visit on site museums. But there was so much more than this to see and do. We also went to interesting little towns, Venetian fortresses, beautiful varied countryside and Athens with its wonderful museums. The pace of the trip was unhurried; the guide was great (his retelling of the ancient tales from Homer as we drove along were as good as an audio book…). We walked, on the un-touristed Mani peninsular, bussed through a mountain pass, and braved the metro in Athens. Oh yes, and the food was lovely too! I had not visited Greece (outside Athens) before; this was an enjoyable introduction to the country. My tips for those considering booking? Take a guide book with you as expert guides are not provided at all sites (though Neil always gave us a talk and a hand out before we arrived), and make sure you have comfy shoes.
