There are two great experiences on this holiday. First is walking to and seeing the gorillas. Our walk took an hour up and half-an-hour down. It was fairly easy although the altitude effect could be experienced going up. The second experience, which we had not anticipated, was our day at the cultural village; our hosts were very friendly and, enhanced by a morning walk, we learnt much about their lives. I regret I must emphasise that the other accommodation did not live up to our expectations. The hotel in Ruhengeri is surely not H+, the rooms are scruffy, lightbulbs bare, and the modern Hotel Gorillas across the road was enticing. As for La Palisse in Kigali, it was incredibly disappointing - we all wanted a shower but the water was off at 6pm; when it got going it came out brown in our room. So please look for better hotels. The flights are badly timed, which may be inevitable but they do mean people start tired (and therefore should have a genuinely comfortable hotel on the first night). I suggest Explore considers making this a longer holiday so people get to see more of an extremely attractive country. (ARW - 28th October 2010)
