How was your Explore Tour Leader?

"Good qualities: - kind, compassionate, encouraging, supportive, good humoured, took responsibilitiy for things that went wrong, dealth with issues once raised with him appropriately.
Needs to improve: Better communication with clients in the evenings, should eat with clients at least twice / three times during each week, needs to keep a closer eye on how the 'support team' are fubnctioning, would have been helpful if he had been more forthcoming re. the gaps between breaks and target ascent. If one is struggling  / tired knowing this can be motivational. "

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"1. Be prepared for quite basic conditions. If you've never used a 'long drop' loo it can be a bit of a shock.
2. Take a good stash of antibiotics with you, and paracetamol.
3. If you have any astmatic tendancies at all take a 'reliever''a preventer' and some prednisolone.
4. Make sure you hire or invest in a good sleep mat - I did and it was great. Also don't scrimp on your sleeping bag - it gets cold!
5. Take a good dose of PMA with you, a sense of humour, and a willingness to do it 'a step at a time'. "

Do you have anything else to add?

"1. A double climb is not for the faint hearted, especially as there was no rest day inbetween our climbs. I thing strategically this was a mistake on Explore's part.
2. The average rating is for the appalling food week one, and the rather dire flight out with ethiopian airways.
3.  Explore needs to to be consistent - either give expedition bags away to all who book or don't do it at all. You told me I had to buy mine, but my tent companion was given hers for free.
4. I became unwell 'on tour' I do feel with the benfit of hindsight that the tour leader should have insisted on a medical examination.
5. I would consider Explore again, I am however unlikely to book my flights through you again. It was the worst medium/long haul flight I have ever taken."

Our response

Thank you for your comments; there’s plenty of useful advice there, and we are grateful for this.  We will be contacting you separately as you have sent us further comments, so we would just like to respond to a couple of points here which may be of general interest.
We are sorry you became unwell, and in these circumstances we expect our tour leaders to do everything possible to assist.  However, although they should facilitate medical treatment if this is requested, they have no authority to insist on this.

With regard to the flights, we need to use airlines which will guarantee group allocation – many will not do this – and once that is in place, we look for the best value routings and timings.  However if on any booking you are not happy with the Explore group flights, it is nearly always possible for our staff to book the flights of your choice for you.  If we do this, you have the same protection from us in the event of a delay abroad – for example due to air traffic controllers’ and pilots’ industrial action, or weather-related airport closures – as our customers who have the group flight package.  The flights may cost more, as we cannot offer the group discount, and airport transfers are not included (although we are able to quote for booking these), but we have a number of customers who prefer to make their own choice of route and airline, and we are happy to help.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Reaching the summits of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro as well as the spectacular sunrise behind Kilimanjaro and Mawenzi as seen from Mount Meru. Equally memorable was seeing giraffe and zebra in their wild habitat.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Julius Whitey our tour lead was such a fabulous personality and we were very lucky to have him. He was instrumental in our entire group of seven reaching the summit of both Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. He entertained us with his multilingual singing and always kept us in high spirits and in a positive frame of mind. He kept a close eye on our daily health and performance and paced the group well throughout the trek. He keenly responded to every request and query and never left us wanting or lacking anything.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Remember these keys success factors - slow pace (it is not a race), good hydration (you should be going to the loo every 2 hours), positive mind, listen to your guide, report issues early (even minor headaches), prepare for the cold on Kili (e.g. use down mitts), reasonable fitness (being an accomplished athlete is no success guarantee). Note that Meru is not a walk in the park and demands respect and preparation.

Do you have anything else to add?

Mount Meru is an absolute must do if you are planning on doing Kilimanjaro. The acclimatisation benefits and summit night rehearsal opportunity on Mount Meru are simply unparalleled. Besides the fantastic scenery and proximity to wild life on Mount Meru are an unforgettable experience. I personally think Mount Meru is more beautiful than Kilimanjaro. If you are thinking about this trip or a trip to Kilimanjaro, stop thinking and book this one!
