Explore Product Manager James Adkin met with Emilio Estevez to discuss details of an exciting new tour based on highlights of his film ''The Way'. Starring Emilio's father Martin Sheen, the film also stars the 'Camino de Santiago' or 'The Way of St James' - a pilgrimage route from St. Jean Pied de Port in France, through the Pyrenees and the stunning countryside of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
Explore already have tours that feature the Camino, but as soon as we heard about the movie, we decided to launch another tour dedicated more closely to the places featured in the film. After watching an exclusive preview of ‘The Way’, James met with Emilio to talk about possible itineraries for a new Explore holiday 'Highlights of The Way'.
Emilio said of developing the tour with Explore
“For many people who see the film, The Way seems to instil a strong desire to ‘do’ the Camino. My father and I are passionate about the historic walk and are delighted that we have inspired other people to tread in historic footprints. I have enjoyed helping Explore to develop a tour that incorporates many of the film’s highlights. So much of what the film is about is encapsulated by Explore’s small-group adventure ethos - the sense of companionship that develops with fellow travellers through the sharing of exceptional experiences.”
James said of his meeting with Emilio
“He was really down to earth, warm and friendly – not at all what I expected of a Hollywood star. Emilio took time from his busy schedule to get involved in helping me plan this new tour for Explore customers. He was genuinely interested in this project and as we discussed locations and options over a map of Northern Spain, his passion for the area was clear to see. Emilio was so approachable, and I was also lucky enough to meet his father Martin Sheen”

Martin Sheen, plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his lost son better, Tom decides to leave his California life behind, and in doing so begins to learn the difference between "The life we live and the life we choose."
Explore's James Adkin watched a special preview screening of the film before meeting the stars, and was blown away by how evocative it was of Spain. “I lived in Spain for 8 years, and this film really captures the essence of the country, its people and the magnificent vistas, I felt like I was back there. Anyone who loves Spain will love this film”.
In addition to James, other Explore staff were invited to the screening, including Online Marketing Executive Emma Dixon who said
"This film is such a refreshing contrast to the big budget 3D Hollywood action blockbusters. It is quiet and reflective, and takes you on the journey along with the true-to-life characters.
