Explore is proud and slightly awed, to be working with and supporting two incredible women, Annie Januszewski and Mel King. This courageous pair is competing in the 2009 WoodVale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race, one of the world’s toughest endurance events and is the only female pair out of around 30 teams taking part in the journey from La Gomera in the Canary Isles to Antigua in the Caribbean.
Weather permitting they hope to break the existing British women’s record of 75 days for the 3000 mile crossing. One of them will be rowing at all times, 2 hours on, 2 hours off, only stopping if the weather gets so bad they can’t row and they won’t even stop for Christmas!
Their boat is only 25 ft long and she will feel tiny on that huge ocean, but a 25 ft boat is pretty big for one person to keep moving all the time! They will face extreme mental and physical
hardships, but keeping themselves sane and motivated will be the biggest challenge. They’re determined to have fun though, despite the hardships; this is a massive challenge but also their dream.
And part of their dream, with your help, is to raise some serious money for Macmillan Cancer Support. What they hope to achieve is something out of the ordinary, but, in their words “it pales into insignificance against the care [the] Macmillan staff provide.”
Please help them to support Macmillan by sponsoring them. Thank you.
The girls’ boat, “Explore Adventure Tours”, will be leaving La Gomera on 6th December 2009. They will be blogging here on our site every few days from the boat, via satellite communications and you’ll be able to keep a track of their position here too, updated every few hours, so keep checking back to see how they’re doing.
Follow your own Dream
Annie & Mel had a dream unattainable by most of us mere mortals, but the beauty about dreams and goals is that they are all personal and the scale of them doesn’t matter to anyone but you. You may want to top the heights of Kilimanjaro, or reach Everest Base Camp, but perhaps your own dream is to visit The Galapagos, see mountain gorillas in the wild visit China’s Great Wall or cycle the Canal du Midi.
Whatever your personal dream may be though, there’s probably an Explore holiday you can achieve it on, so why not make this the year you make your own dream into reality.
