There are certain names that conjure a sense of inexplicable exoticism. Faraway lands, from Timbuktu to Zanzibar, which beckon wonder and mystery.

Marooned off the Ecuadorian coast beyond human touch, corruption and devastation, the Galapagos Islands are quite simply one of the world's greatest natural wonders.

Olympic fever seems to be sweeping the nation, including the Explore office. Tim Hornby, one of our IT gurus, was one of the lucky 8000 people to actually carry the torch. 

The organisers of the Olympics seem to be. As sporting faux pas go, this is down there with the worst. And given that North and South Korea have been at war for seven decades, this was one rivalry that didn’t need provoking. 

Megan Freese, our Operations manager, had been to Egypt as a child and the memories of it encouraged her to return earlier this year. Here are some of her highlights from her trip:

The exquisitely detailed yet monumentally scaled Roman temple ruins found at Baalbek in Lebanon are a sight to behold. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure and is counted by many to be among the most impressive wonders of the ancient world. Known as Heliopolis during the rule of the Roman Empire, the ruins are some of the largest and best preserved in the world.

Although there is no doubt that the migration of thousands of wildebeest through the Masai Mara and Seregeti is a spectacular event, there are many equally rewarding safari experiences to be had.

There were funny, scary, adventurous and unique stories plus some that were simply strange! After a bit of deliberation we managed to whittle the entries down to our top ten.
