Scouting the Gambia!
We’re pleased to have supported a worthwhile and exciting expedition by 14 year old Explorer Scout Connor Howieson, who headed off to the Gambia late last year.
His trip was part of a mission organised by Cambridgeshire Scout Expeditions and he travelled with 19 other Scouts from across the country. Connor was the only person to be invited to take part from Edinburgh however.
The aim of the expedition mirrored some of the things we do with various projects and charities we support around the world where we try to make a difference no matter how small, but also to learn about and appreciate other communities and ways of life.

Helping out
In this case the aim is to help improve the quality of life and educational opportunities for young people in a tribal village as well as giving the 20 participants the chance to experience and perhaps learn from a community in a very different part of the world.
They travelled to a remote village in the Gambia and spent one month living and working there to convert a building into teaching accommodation. On completion, the new building will allow the tribe to recruit new teachers on the basis they will have somewhere comfortable and safe to stay while they teach at the local school.
Connor and Explore
We decided to support Connor’s trip after he approached us (in a very professional way) stating his case clearly and concisely. As he says “I think that this experience will enable me to appreciate other cultures and see how other young people live as well as helping them in a small way.”
