Our Polar Ships

We only use small, highly respected expedition ships, captained adn crewed by some of the the top experts in their field. All the ships have ice-strengthened hulls, enabling them to manouevre safely in the ice. None of the ships are luxurious but are all comfortable and sensibly kitted out for expedition voyages in polar conditions. Whatever ship you choose what you will enjoy the most is the warm, friendly atmosphere on-board - and the chance to witness some of nature's most extraordinary sights up-close and in the company of a small number of like-minded people.

M/S Expedition gets the best of both worlds: large enough to offer stability, spacious cabins and generous public areas, but small enough to manoeuvre easily and get you close to the action. With a maximum of only 126 guests and a high ratio of expedition staff to passengers, there’s a relaxed, informal atmosphere on-board. The ship was fully refurbished in 2009 so you can expect modern features, fixtures and fittings throughout.

polar_sv_noorderlicht_thumbS/V Noorderlicht

The Noorderlicht was originally built in 1910 in Germany as a three-masted schooner, sailing the Baltic for most of her life. The ship was re-rigged and re-fitted in 1991 and is now a two-masted schooner, perfect for a unique Arctic adventure. The Noorderlicht carries only 20 passengers on an informal and friendly cruise in the company of adventurous travellers and experienced and welcoming crew; get involved with sailing duties, too!

polar_ortelius_thumbM/V Ortelius

M/V Ortelius is a former Russian scientific vessel, built in Poland. Named after the cartographer who published the first modern world atlas, Ortelius is a good expedition vessel for exploring the more remote polar regions because of its high ice-class rating (meaning it can navigate difficult conditions). It also has a large amount of deck space from which passengers can observe the passing wilderness and a good number of on-board experts and Zodiacs to maximise wildlife-viewing.
