M/S Expedition – Sea Kayaking & Camping Optional Extras
E-mail Print

Make your journey to the polar regions extra special by opting to go sea kayaking or spend a night camping on the ice (Antarctica only). These optional extras are only available if you book them prior to your departure and space is limited – so book now to secure your place!

Kayaking – Arctic and Antarctica

Enjoy the polar environment from a completely different perspective, for a more intimate experience as you bob through the waves.  As you glide silently among the ice floes, you might be very lucky and come eye to eye with an inquisitive whale or seal. Accompanied by an experienced leader, you will kayak in a group to sheltered bays and areas known for their calmer waters. No other activity gets you as close to the natural marine environment.

Kayaking is offered as an optional extra (subject to availability) on all Arctic and Antarctic voyages aboard the M/S Expedition (except Norwegian Fjords and Polar Bears - ELN). We use twin kayaks. Each time you go kayaking you will forgo a trip out in a Zodiac inflatable boat.

Arctic - £429 per person
Antarctica – £429 per person

To book kayaking, call our polar team on 0844 875 1895 as soon as possible prior to your departure.

NB: kayaking excursions are dependent on the weather but you can expect to kayak around four times per voyage for about one to two hours each time. We strongly recommend that only those with some previous kayaking experience take this option and that you get some extra practice before departing. However, you don’t need to know how to roll a kayak or do a self-rescue. Professional guides will be on hand to assist you. The maximum hip width that will fit into the kayaks is 40cm; please ensure that you are this size or smaller before you book this activity.

What to bring
If you opt to go kayaking, you will be required to bring suitable clothing in order to take part; it is extremely important to be able to stay warm and dry. The loan of a waterproof paddling suit and safety vest is included in the price; we will need to know what size you will require. Full details will be provided on request.

Camping – Antarctica

Antarctica-Camping.jpg-NewFor a true Antarctic experience, do as all the famous explorers did and camp out on the ice. Although, unlike them, your camping adventure will be for one night only. Experience the sounds of creaking ice, the fresh scent of the sea and the full glory of the night sky untainted by any light pollution – time of year and weather permitting! Once the camp is set up, you are free to wander in the local area with ample opportunities for photography, writing or quiet contemplation.

Camping is offered as on optional activity on all voyages to Antarctica aboard the M/S Expedition subject to availability. All equipment is provided including a two-person tent, insulating mat, minus 20°C sleeping bag and portable toilet facilities. In accordance with IAATO regulations, no food may be taken ashore except emergency rations. You will be given a full meal on board the ship prior to your camping excursion. You will be off-ship for approximately 10-12 hours.

If you would like to spend a night on the ice, you must book prior to departure. The cost is £99 per person.

To book a night camping on the ice, call our polar team on 0844 875 1895 as soon as possible prior to your departure.
