For experienced cyclists looking for something truly unique, Explore‚Äôs new cycling tour of Bhutan offers customers a tough but rewarding challenge. The 18-day Tour of the Thunder Dragon journeys to the remote Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan, home to one of the world‚Äôs toughest one day cycling races ‚Äď the ‚ÄėTour of the Dragon‚Äô. The tour also includes two free days in Kathmandu, Nepal, where customers will have the opportunity to explore Durbar Square and Asan Bazaar. Departing in August 2013, the tour costs from ¬£3,847 per person, to include return flights, B&B accommodation, most other meals, transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle.
For something equally unique, but more sedate and closer to home, the new nine-day Cycling the Baltic States tour combines Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Graded easy, it cycles through picturesque countryside and coastal towns and customers will have the opportunity to explore national parks, historic castles and quaint fishing villages. With departures from May to September 2013, the tour costs from ¬£1,041 per person. At the end of each day, customers will return to the family-run, rustic hotel base in the ‚Äėwhite village‚Äô of Canillas, where they can enjoy delicious local food and sample the region‚Äôs famous sweet wine. The tour, which is graded moderate to challenging, offers fantastic value-for-money and costs from ¬£695 per person, to include return flights, B&B accommodation, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader. Departures from May to November 2013.
Another new addition for off-road enthusiasts is Explore’s eight-day High Atlas Traverse. Reaching an altitude of 2,600 meters, customers face several steep ascents and descents, before ending the tour at the foot of Cathedral Mountain. Graded challenging, the tour, which takes place over most bank holiday weekends between March and September 2013, costs from £779 per person. This includes return flights, B&B accommodation, most other meals, bike hire, transport and the services of a tour leader and support vehicle.
Ashley Toft, Managing Director for Explore, commented ‚ÄúCycling holidays have been steadily increasing in popularity over the last couple of years, but we saw a sharp rise in bookings correlating directly with the 2012 Games. We expect our expanded collection to appeal to the full spectrum of cyclists ‚Äď there really is something for everyone.‚ÄĚ
He continued, ‚ÄúNot only are our cycling holidays sociable, active and a great way to explore undiscovered areas that most visitors never get to see, but they also represent fantastic value for money. Unlike most other tour operators, we include the hire of high-quality bikes in the cost of all of our trips, meaning that customers don‚Äôt have to worry about taking their own bike abroad or paying extra to hire one locally‚ÄĚ.
