Wonder of the Pyramids

Wonder of the Pyramids - Chris Bradley

In February 2006 a US team announced the discovery of a previously unopened tomb in the Valley of the Kings - the first since King Tut was disturbed by Howard Carter in 1922.

But you don't need to spend years digging in the desert sands to experience a revelation, as hieroglyphics expert and Explore leader Dr Angela McDonald explains.

'Taking part in a specialist archaeological tour makes you re-examine what you think you know - on my last tour I ended up having debates about ancient Egyptian grammar over dinner with a traveller who'd taught himself hieroglyphics! But one of the reasons these tours have proved so popular is that they always attract a mixed bunch, from the novice to the keen enthusiast. They also include spots that rarely see regular tourist - as well as offering a fresh take at well-known sites, such as following the trails of the ancient workmen.

Plunged into darkness - Eclipse and Astronomy

Sunshades for the Eclipse

Watching the Eclipse with cool shades

On August 1st 2008 a total eclipse is due in the northern hemisphere, travelling over the islands of the Canadian Arctic, Spitsbergen, Siberia and China, where it ends at sunset to the West of Beijing.

The 2009 eclipse is especially exciting as it will offer the chance to experience some of the longest durations of totality possible; up to almost 6 minutes on our tours in China and around 4 minutes on our tours to Japan.
