In February 2006 a US team announced the discovery of a
previously unopened tomb in the Valley of the Kings - the first
since King Tut was disturbed by Howard Carter in 1922.
But you don't need to spend years digging in the desert sands to
experience a revelation, as hieroglyphics expert and Explore leader
Dr Angela McDonald explains.
'Taking part in a specialist archaeological tour makes you
re-examine what you think you know - on my last tour I ended up
having debates about ancient Egyptian grammar over dinner with a
traveller who'd taught himself hieroglyphics! But one of the
reasons these tours have proved so popular is that they always
attract a mixed bunch, from the novice to the keen enthusiast. They
also include spots that rarely see regular tourist - as well as
offering a fresh take at well-known sites, such as following the
trails of the ancient workmen.
