When to Travel

Chile is an ideal year-round destination. As it's in the southern hemisphere, expect warmer temperatures between November and March; with cooler days from May to September. Patagonia is visited from November to March.

DESERT, MOUNTAINS, AMAZON

Chile is famed for Patagonia’s picture-postcard scenery. Natural wonders stretch from the Chilean Lake District to the awe-inspiring glaciers of the southernmost Cape Horn; from glaciers and towering peaks, over snow-encrusted Andes, to the lunar desert landscapes of the west.

Meet Hanna Holmes, Regional Specialist for Chile

Hanna-Coughlan
This thin and long country is full of surprises and natural wonders and is very diverse -  the North sees the driest desert on earth, Atacama, with its lunar landscapes and intense sunsets; the central region has cosmopolitan Santiago and the renowned wine region and the South is any nature lover’s ideal destination, with turquoise lakes, mighty peaks and fjords. Let’s not forget Easter Island, the remote and fascinating island off the Chilean coast. I have fond memories of sitting on a sand dune sipping red wine in the desert at sunset after a whole day spent walking through canyon-like rocks and sandy ridges.

“A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE CHILE HIGHLIGHTS”

The Salar de Atacama

“This large salt flat in the Atacama Desert is best visited at sunset when the changing light creates stunning colours. What’s more, three of the world’s six different types of flamingo can be found in abundance here, providing impressive viewing.”

Wine

“Contrary to common assumption, Chile has a long winemaking history, dating back to the 16th Century. One of our favourite Chilean wines is Carménère, and there can be little better than enjoying a glass of this fruity red by a log fire after a day’s exploration of this fantastic country.”

Torres del Paine

“It is said that you can experience all four seasons in one day in the Torres del Paine National Park and that is an experience in itself. This remote region of Patagonia is abundant with spectacular glaciers, jagged mountain peaks and vibrant turquoise lakes – an ever changing landscape revealed at every turn of the path.”
