Latin America pulsates with life. In South America you can samba at colourful Brazilian festivals and dally with blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos Islands. In Central America, be dazzled by iridescent Costa Rican toucans and tiny tree frogs or ride through Havana’s twisting streets in a Cuban vintage car.
Our tailor-made team have trekked the Inca Trail, come face-to-face with giant tortoises, sailed Chilean fjords and searched for jaguars in the Pantanal. There are many wonderful experiences in this diverse continent, and here we share a few of our favourites.
Brazil
Brazil is a kaleidoscope of colour; not least because of the vast wealth of wildlife that lives amid its tree and rainforest canopies. The Amazon is on every traveller’s wish list and by using an eco-lodge as your base, you can discover the nooks and crannies of the jungle with native tribes who call this wild place their home. Journey to the Pantanal, too, in search of jaguars – it’s one of the best places in the world to sight them.
But Brazil isn’t just about the wildlife. We’d like to design you an itinerary that includes Rio de Janeiro, an electrifying city, which, when you’re done with exploring, provides the perfect haven on the golden sands of Copacabana. Then we’ll take you to Iguazu Falls and, literally, into the throat of the Devil – La Garganta del Diablo is as close to the thundering cascades as you can possibly get…
Peru
Peru’s rich history is the tapestry that runs through the country and will form your tailor-made experiences of this amazing land. Stay with a local family on Lake Titicaca, where customs have remained unchanged for centuries; they’ll also cook dinner for you. In little-visited northern Peru, join fishermen in their age-old tradition of pushing boats out to sea and discover ancient Inca sites.
And talking of the Incas, world-famous Machu Picchu is now on your doorstep… trekking the Inca Trail and arriving at the most sacred of their sites is, quite simply, one of the best experiences in the world; imagine yourself centuries ago, living as the Incas did, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Of course, walking isn’t the only way to get to Machu Picchu; you can also take a train and, if you wish, stay in a luxurious hotel nearby.
Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands have never been attached to another landmass and, as a result, are home to a staggering array of endemic wildlife. There have also never been any predators on the Galapagos, which means the iguanas, birds, tortoises, sea lions, penguins and fish are inquisitive and come very close to where you are – something that you won’t experience in many other destinations.
For your journey on the Ecuadorian mainland, we recommend a trip along the Avenue of the Volcanoes. As the name suggests, the route is flanked by snow-capped peaks, which are part of the Eastern and Western Cordillera, culminating at Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Explore lakes and glaciers by foot, bike or horse.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a playground for wildlife and adventure lovers. You can zip-line through the rainforest, walk high amid the tree-tops on canopy walkways and bathe in hot springs in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. All of this in the company of tiny tree frogs, the colourful plumage of the resplendent quetzal and hummingbirds flittering around the cloud forest.
Corcovado National Park is a great environment for Baird’s tapir, ocelot and spider monkeys, which you can spot on walking trails through the montane and cloud forest; you may also be able to see jaguar in Monteverde Cloud Forest. One of our favourites is Manual Antonio National Park, where pristine white sands meet lush forests – hang out on the beach with white-faced monkeys! We whole-heartedly suggest you pay a visit to colourful Costa Rica, especially as it’s one of our best-value Latin American destinations.
