I’m not a monogamist when it comes to travel but if forced to choose one country I’ve fallen completely in love with it would have to be Turkey. Why? The Turks are incredibly hospitable to the visitor and have a great sense of humour. Mouth-watering food, spectacular and varied scenery and some of the best and most beautifully located Greco-Roman sites anywhere. Simply put, I feel at home there.

Wherever I travel I take a phrase book – for me travel is all about connecting with the local people, and taking the trouble to communicate in their language makes a huge difference, especially when you get really off the beaten tourist track.

The other thing I always do is a bit of reading before I go. It’s great to go to a new place ready to be surprised, but a bit of prior knowledge and insight adds to your understanding and enjoyment no end.
