If you want to come home from holiday feeling you’ve really got under the skin of the country you’re visiting, my advice is to do everything you can to meet the local people, as often as you can and for as long as you can. Take any opportunity to wander off piste and strike up conversation with as many random people as you can, don’t be shy! Speaking at least a few words of the local language helps too, along with any ice-breakers you can think of (card tricks, photos of home, etc.)

The other thing that’s really important to me when I travel is the food: in fact some of my best memories are food related! I think my most memorable meal was on a Chilean estancia (working farm) deep in Patagonia after a great hike through snowy landscapes with a biting cold wind… lamb roasted over an open fire, accompanied by real chips, salads and lots of red wine, while the snow fell outside…
