Our climate action plan

Climate action matters to us so we've worked hard to build a plan that's thorough, honest, and drives us to continually do better. Explore our four steps: measure, reduce, mitigate and communicate.
In January 2020, Explore became a founding signatory of Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency, a global community of travel companies committed to building a better future for tourism. It was a commitment we took seriously and this Climate Action Plan is the result.

We believe travel should change us, not the planet. That's the idea at the heart of everything here. Our plan is shaped by four pillars - measure, reduce, mitigate and communicate, each one essential, each one connected.

We've worked hard to build something genuinely useful, because for us this isn't box-ticking, it's a responsibility. We work with ecollective to measure the full carbon footprint of every single one of our tours, from flights and accommodation right down to meals and activities. We've set science-based targets to cut our emissions, and we're already making real changes - from swapping short flights for train journeys, to designing longer trips that make every flight work harder. We support nature restoration projects through partners including Rewilding Britain, Cool Earth and Greening Australia, and we're investing in carbon removal solutions for the emissions we can't yet eliminate.

We'll make mistakes along the way, and we may not hit every target. But we'll be open about it, sharing both our progress and our setbacks, and we'll keep pushing forward. As our understanding grows, this plan will grow with us.

We'd love to hear from you — whether you want to learn more, ask questions, or challenge us on any of it. Get in touch at sustainability@explore.co.uk.

Why we travel: Benefits of tourism

Carbon is just one piece of the puzzle when designing and operating sustainable trips that have as light a footprint as possible.

Tourism brings other benefits: economic, social and environmental.
