Read on to discover the ultimate highlights of the 'Stans':

1. The Silk Road

Extending from East Asia to the Mediterranean, the world-famous Silk Road passes through many 'Stans,' including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. From the cobalt-blue tiles and ornate mosaics of Samarkand's Registan Square, and the domed bazaars of Bokhara, to the old fortified city of Khiva, our small group tour along the Silk Road will take you back in time to an ancient era of lucrative international trade.

2. Merv, Turkmenistan

At its height in the 11th and 12th centuries, the city of Merv in Turkmenistan was known as the 'Queen of the World' and the finest city in Islam. Situated along the great trading routes of the Silk Road, Merv echoes tales of empires long gone. On our Turkmenistan small group tour, you'll travel via the town of Mary and the Kaka Oasis to reach this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll take in ancient remnants scattered across 100sq km.

3. Iskanderkul, Tajikistan

Nestled in the heart of the Fann Mountains, Iskanderkul is one of the most beautiful lakes in all of Tajikistan. Said to be named after Alexander the Great, this alpine lake stands at an altitude of 2,200 metres and is surrounded by lush greenery, all set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. One of the best things to do in Iskanderkul is to head down to the shoreline, which is easily one of the most picturesque picnic spots!

4. Dushanbe, Tajikistan

There's plenty to see and do in Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan, although it's also an easy city to relax in, too. Take in the incredible interiors of Navruz Palace, check out the traditional instruments at the Museum of Musical Instruments and stroll through the city's central market where you can barter for fruit, clothes and textiles. Dushanbe is also a great place to sample traditional Tajik cuisine, too; tuck into vegetable salad starters, hearty soups, shashlik and freshly baked bread.

5. Darvaza, Turkmenistan

Crimson red and deep orange embers glow brightly against the inky black sky of Turkmenistan's Karakum desert. Sat in our camp at the edge of the Darvaza Crater, it's hard not to be mesmerized by the unusual fiery display. The flaming spherical void, also known as the 'door-to-hell,' is thought to have formed following the collapse of a natural gas field that geologists lit to burn off the gas. Fifty years later, it is still ablaze and a sight you'll never forget - a true spectacle of Mother Nature!

6. Khiva, Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan's Khiva, you'll feel as though you've been transported onto an 'Arabian Nights' film set as you wander within the turreted walls of the Old Citadel, a major Silk Road trading hub during the 19th century. Buildings embellished with elaborate mosaic tiles of every shade of blue rise out the sandy desert, and ancient towers ascend into the heavens. Climb the steps of Dzhuma Minaret for far-reaching views of this well-preserved medieval city and browse handmade wares in the bustling bazaars. On our Upgraded - Treasures of Uzbekistan tour, you'll get to stay outside the historical centre where you'll hunker down in spacious rooms with their own balconies.

7. Issyk Kul lake, Kyrgyzstan

A mirror image of the mighty Tien Shan mountains reflects in the tranquil waters of Kyrgystan's Issyk Kul Lake. The second-largest alpine lake in the world, its name translates as 'warm lake,' so-called because its saline waters never freeze, despite sub-zero winter temperatures. Walk along the tranquil shoreline to discover ancient petroglyph rock carvings dating back to the 7th century BC, and visit the nearby city of Karakol to explore the Buddhist inspired Dungan Mosque and the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral.

8. Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Aquamarine domes tower above the golden city skyline, and mosaic walls gleam in the bright sunlight in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Seek out Registan Square to discover intricately tiled madrasah doorways and stand under the immense blue arch of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque. Immerse yourself in the local culture with a walk through narrow winding alleyways and browse the lively bazaar crammed full of local produce, including delicious dried apricots, juicy dates and aromatic fresh bread.

9. Charyn Canyon, Kazakhstan

Nestled in Charyn National Park in the Almaty region, Kazakhstan's Charyn Canyon dazzles with unusual rock formations and deep valleys - there's no wonder why it's often compared to the Grand Canyon. Part of this stunning natural landscape is called the 'Valley of the Castles', from where you can descend from the rim down to the river. With rugged trails and spectacular panoramic views, Charyn Canyon is both ancient and awe-inspiring.

10. Almaty, Kazakhstan

Nestled in the foothills of the Zailiysky Alatau range, Almaty is one of the best cities to visit in Kazakhstan. There's an undeniable European feel to it, with its wide, leafy boulevards and restored period buildings. While Almaty ceded capital status to Astana in 1997, it remains the country's cultural and financial centre, where Russians, nomadic Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tartars and many other ethnic groups rub shoulders. A visit to Almaty provides a fascinating insight into Kazakh history and culture - check out the Park of 28 Guards and the Green Market, and don't forget to try Kurt (salted cheese balls) and Kazzan (smoked horse sausage)!
