USA

June signals the start of summer in the USA’s national parks: the trails begin to open, the snow is largely free from all but the highest routes and footfall is low – it’s a great time to travel before the crowds swell ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend and sizzling summer months. Choose our Western USA National Parks Explorer holiday and you can live the American dream for 17 epic days, exploring Bryce, Zion, and Yosemite national parks, plus the Grand Canyon, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies.

The Baltic States endure long, dark winters, so when the Summer Solstice rolls around the longest day is a cause for great celebration. During the month of June, the landscape turns green and lush, while the Pagan festivities highlight the magnitude of the event. Russia

The drawn-out, sub-zero winters in Russia mean summer is celebrated with great fanfare. Travel in June for the solstice and you’ll get to experience the liveliest celebration of them all, the White Nights festival, which celebrates the almost midnight sun. Between late April and August, the sun never completely sets; instead the night sky remains twilight affording long, light days ideal for exploring. On our Russia's Golden Ring tour, you can experience St Petersburg’s two-week festival of music and carnivals, including actors dressed as Peter and Catherine the Great.

India

The northern Indian state of Ladakh has a very short annual season, and one of the best times to visit is for the Buddhist monastery festivals in June as the weather warms up, but before the monsoon rains arrive. On our tour of the Indian Himalayas, you’ll have a full day to visit the gompas – monasteries – of Thiksey, Taktak and Hemis. Hemis gompa is around 50km from Leh and is the largest and most opulent monastery in Ladakh; here you’ll watch monks perform dancing ceremonies to the sound of traditional long horn pipes and drums.

Peru

Travel to Peru in June for the Winter Solstice, where it’s officially the dry season. The Inti Raymi festival in Cusco is the highlight of the calendar, when local people gather together to show appreciation to the Sun God with music, colourful costumes and – best of all – the sharing of food. The ancient Inca festival is held once per year and on our Classic Peru trip, you’ll get to witness a historical reconstruction at Sacsayhuaman Fortress.

Canada

Canada’s scenery doesn’t disappoint at any time of the year, but in June the beauty of late spring brings the spectacular landscape into its own. The winter blanket of snow beats its retreat, though can still be seen on the higher peaks offering a fabulous contrast between the lush forests and spring flowers. Plus, visiting Canada before the summer crowds arrive means making the most of lower prices at hotels and campsites. On our Western Canada tour you’ll visit three magnificent national parks, plus have the option to sea kayak the coast or go whale watching.
