9 Reasons to book a winter break

Escape dark and dreary days with a small group tour this winter. Whether you’re looking for sunshine, fewer crowds, a festive holiday with a difference or a unique new year challenge, here are nine reasons to pick a winter travel destination for your next adventure.

Winter sun

Break free of winter hibernation and top up your vitamin D levels with a holiday to the warm, golden beaches of Negril on our tour to Jamaica, or escape the festive season frenzy with a Maldives dhoni cruise to relax on palm-fringed beaches and swim in turquoise-blue waters. Alternatively, for something more active, jump in the saddle for an immersive tour of Cambodia and Vietnam by bike and pedal through exotic jungles of the Mekong Delta.

Exotic wildlife

Get up close with mountain gorilla on our Gorilla and Chimp Safari in Uganda. The dry season occurs from December to March, so this is the ideal time to catch a glimpse of these incredible primates. Visit Antarctica during the penguin-hatching season in January to see fluffy Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo chicks waddling around the vast ice floes. Or improve your chances of spotting One-horned Rhino during Nepal’s dry season in December on our Nepal Adventure Tour.

Fewer crowds

Many winter travel destinations are much quieter during the offseason. Benefit from deserted beaches on our Canary Islands Walking Trip, reconnect with nature on Iceland’s empty Ring Road on our Iceland Winter Adventure or camp amongst huge, empty sand dunes under a dazzling night sky on our Oman tour.

Cooler temperatures

Avoid the intense heat and humidity of India’s summer with our Family Taj & Palaces trip during the winter months. Not only will the cooler temperatures make your journey more comfortable, but sightings of Bengal tiger are also more frequent at this time of year. Or, for a more pleasant cycling trip in Burma, explore the temple-studded plains of ancient Bagan in November to avoid monsoon rains and take advantage of a fresher climate.

Festive holidays

Discover how other cultures celebrate Christmas on a small group tour to Jordan this winter. Rise early on Christmas morning to retrace the footsteps of Moses on our Jordan adventure holiday with a sacred pilgrimage to the dusty summit of Mount Nebo. Or, why not make this festive season one to remember with Baltic Capitals Cities tour. Visit spectacular Christmas markets and on the big day enjoy a feast of local Estonian food with your group in Tallinn.

Winter wonderlands

From snow tubing and cross country skiing to snowcat rides and ice hotels, immerse yourself in a magical winter wonderland on one of our winter activity tours. Whisk the kids away to a vast snowy playground on our Slovakia Family Winter Adventure and go night sledging through the Pieniny Mountains. Or catch a glimpse of the fluorescent green shards of the Aurora Borealis from a comfortable yurt camp on our Iceland Northern Lights break

New Year celebrations

Start the year as you mean to go on with an unforgettable small group holiday in January. Welcome in the New Year with celebrations in Vietnam; head to the streets of Hue with fellow travellers and join friendly locals to watch colourful fireworks bursting into the inky-black skies at midnight. Or enjoy a New Years Eve exploring Funchal, going whale-watching and marvelling at spectacular fireworks on our Madeira walking trip

Winter challenges

If summiting Kilimanjaro is on your bucket list, the winter months are an ideal time to make your dream a reality. Expect dry, sunny days from December through to March with slightly warmer temperatures in January and February. Join our Kilimanjaro Trek to hike across savannah plains and icy caldera trails before ascending over the brow of this iconic mountain. Absorb breathtaking panoramas from Africa’s highest peak, and, at this time of year, you may even be able to see the curvature of the Earth dipping over the horizon!

Festival celebrations

Discover fascinating international festivals on a winter small group adventure. Go beyond the tourist trail to uncover the true culture of Ethiopia on our Blue Nile and Lalibela tour and witness the lively celebrations of Ethiopia’s Timkat Festival (the Ethiopian Epiphany) in January. Or head to Bhutan to see the streets come alive with colourful costumes, elaborate masks and beating drums in November.
