Book now for summer: family adventures to make the most of the summer holidays

There’s been a change in the weather over recent months: the nights have drawn in, and the cold snaps and damp drizzle have done nothing for morale in the Explore office. We’re looking forward to sunnier summer days, and you could too with our pick of the best places to visit in the summer holidays. Give yourself something to look forward to over the winter!
Visit Buddha’s island and sail the warm waters of the Maldives
For the perfect blend of culture and relaxation, nothing beats our family holiday to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, with 10 days spent enjoying the beautiful and varied surroundings of Sri Lanka and a further five days discovering the warm currents and underwater wonders of the Maldives.  Sri Lanka is known as ‘India’s teardrop’, but the island is not to be out shadowed by its northerly neighbour. With its plethora of World Heritage Sites, ancient temples, picturesque beaches and dense jungle scenery, Sri Lanka is as educational as it is suited to adventure seekers. And what better way to relax after an exhilarating trip around the country than with a few days to unwind on board a traditional dhoni boat, cooking barbecues on the beach and stopping off at secret islands?

Go on the prowl on an adventure-packed safari
As safari holidays go, Tanzania offers some of the best, which you can visit on an Explore family safari holiday. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of seeing your first big cat in the bush, or tracking an elusive, vibrant bird in a baobab tree. Tanzania is a very well established safari destination, with a great chance of seeing a wide variety of wildlife, accompanied by experienced guides and staying in family oriented lodges. Our Serengeti safari takes in the country’s highlights of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most iconic national parks and the beach resort of Zanzibar. Alternatively, combine the Indian Ocean coast with game drives in Saadani and Selous reserves, where you can view lion, zebra and elephant.
Enjoy a very big adventure to the world’s largest dunes
New for 2018, Namibia is set to be one of our top family holiday destinations. Its landscapes are a complete departure from the usual African stereotype: imagine deep canyons, towering red dunes, shimmering white salt pans and a pillowy coastline where the sandbanks of the Skeleton Coast meet the sea, shrouded in dense fog. Because of its harsh environments, the animal residents of Namibia have had to adapt to the conditions; here, lions can climb trees and elephants have developed wider feet to cope with the shifting sands. Our Family Namibian Adventure makes the most of the time available in the summer, with a 13-day trip from Windhoek, travelling to private game reserves, conservation parks, coastal towns and the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei.

Travel around the Galapagos Islands for a holiday to treasure
Wildlife lovers will find the Galapagos Islands the perfect place to learn about some of the world’s most fascinating creatures. In Darwin’s ‘living laboratory’, it’s possible to get up close to a number of incredible animals, such as snorkelling with seals and penguins. Staying in an island lodge enables you the freedom to explore each of the islands in turn, with easy speedboat and ferry transfers providing a fun and interactive way to get around. Our Family Ecuador and the Galapagos Adventure spends five days discovering the Galapagos Islands, with the week proceeding spent on the Ecuadorian mainland, learning about the country’s fascinating history with visits to markets, artisan craftsmakers, the Amazon and the Avenue of the Volcanoes.
Discover the volcanoes, beaches and culture of beautiful Indonesia
Indonesia is as far-flung as they come, but the long flight time is well worth it for the experiences on offer. While Bali is the most popular draw, don’t discount the islands of Flores, Komodo or Lombok: this is where you’ll find the richest culture, most spectacular landscapes and thrilling wildlife encounters, though you’ll get to try delicious Indonesian staples like nasi goreng throughout. Our Family Indonesian Highlights trip takes in all four islands, taking you through paddy fields, smouldering volcanoes and tribal villages. This trip is perfect for adventurous families, with time spent on board a boat searching for Komodo dragons; visiting in the summer holidays is the ideal time to spot these dangerous lizards, which are seen in greater numbers after the mating season which takes place between May and August.
