"I have decided to sign up for the Coast to Coast cycle trip in 2017 to give myself a physical challenge.
While I commute by bike I never do more than 10 miles in one go. I love cycling but juggling the logistics of a young family means I rarely get the chance to cycle for pleasure. I chose the Coast to Coast trip as I thought it would be a great challenge to see if I can get from one side of the country to the other all under my own steam. It can also be completed in a long weekend so is attractive as minimal childcare will be needed to cover my absence! It is also a chance to explore the beautiful English countryside by bike and I have heard there are many great tea rooms en route so no doubt I will be refuelling with some delicious home baked cakes along the way. I have also been told to look out for locally brewed ‘Saddle Sore’ beer and have the odd pint to reward a long day on the bike.
I’m nervous about the hills in the Lake District but looking forward to the views and downhill sections. I have also never explored the North Pennines which I think will also be a challenge but what I am sure will be a pretty one. I have booked one of the July departures hoping for blue skies but will pack my rain coat just in case, as the English weather can be unpredictable at the best of times. Having a tour leader is reassuring and knowing that any bike maintenance issues will be taken care of as well as my luggage being transported to the next night stop for me means I can relax and enjoy the ride.
As well as enjoying the fresh air, exercise (cakes!) and camaraderie of cycling in a small group I hope to get a sense of achievement from cycling the breadth of the country. Wish me luck!"
