This European cycling trip winds from Marseille in France to Barcelona in Spain, with each day offering a new adventure. Read on to discover Caitlin's take:

One of the best ways to explore a new destination is by two wheels. Cycling holidays are a great opportunity to push yourself or simply soak up your new surroundings - all while gaining a deeper appreciation of the differing landscapes, cultures and experiences as you go.

We caught up with Caitlin, who recently joined our Cycle Marseille to Barcelona tour. This small group cycling tour starts in the French port city of Marseille and sees you take on a mix of cycling, bus and train routes to reach your final stop in Barcelona, Spain.

Read on to discover what Caitlin made of her unforgettable small group tour:

Describe this trip in one word?

Bountiful. Cycling from France to Spain was a tremendous and straight-forward way to see lots of wonderful places in one trip - including many I'd never heard of before! Each day of the trip offered something different, from the cultures to the landscapes, and with the help of our tour leader, Peter, we learned so much about each place, too.

How did you find your tour leader?

Our tour leader, Peter, was as organised as can be on a cycling trip. We really valued this as we were navigating lots of different towns and cities - I wouldn't have known where to go had I been on my own! Peter was one step ahead of us and knew how to adjust plans if necessary.

There was one really windy day, so Peter arranged an alternative section of the route instead. Aside from cycling, he also led us on interesting walking tours and shared his knowledge of the destinations with us.

What were your fellow Explorers like?

Our group was a mix of couples, friends and solos, all from a wide range of countries. You don't have to be a cycling pro to join this trip - it's graded at a Moderate level, so there were a few undulating routes and occassional energetic climbs. Our group ranged from those who have cycled loads before to relative newbies, like myself.

What was your favourite cycle?

One of my favourite cycling routes was in France. We were cycling through the protected wetlands of the Camargue, far removed from any traffic and surrounded by nature. We saw lots of flamingos, too - it felt very magical!

We also cycled along a stretch of the Canal du Midi, where I loved watching the boats pass through the locks.

What was your highlight of the trip?

We took the train from France to Spain and visited the Dalí Theatre and Museum in Girona. It was a nice break from all the active cycling we'd been doing and soak up the local culture.

While this was a cycling trip, we had enough free time factored in, whether that was visiting ancient ruins in Empuries or swimming in the sea.

How did you find the pace of this trip?

The cycling grade for this trip is described as Moderate, which meant there were medium-length rides that included occasional energetic climbs, undulating roads and quiet trails.

But the routes were split up quite well, with rest stops and picturesque towns to check out throughout. It was well-paced, though, and we slept well each night!

What do you recommend packing for this trip?

What to pack for this France and Spain cycling tour depends on what time of year you visit. I'd recommend taking a raincoat and swimsuit, regardless of the time of year you visit.

For this cycling trip you'll need to provide your own helmet. While you can bring cycling shoes, it's not necessary; I was comfortable in trainers. It's also worth noting that e-bikes are available, too.

What was the accommodation like?

As we were on the move every day, we stayed in a range of accommodation. Everywhere we stayed was comfortable, and they usually had a restaurant, bar, garden or swimming pool. We stayed in smaller, family-run hotels so not only did we feel very welcome, but it also made our time in France and Spain a more authentic experience.
