From cliffs to coastline: An Amalfi Coast walking adventure

Experience breathtaking hikes, ancient history and authentic experiences on our Amalfi Coast walking tour. Read on for Katy's take.

"I mean, you get to see Amalfi from every possible angle. I thought you'd see it once or twice, but you really see it from above, below, from sea level... you're fully immersed in the Amalfi Coast."

When Katy joined our Amalfi Coast walking tour, we couldn't wait to catch up with her. Each day of this small group trip offers a different scenic hike, with high ridge walks overlooking blissful bays and ancient stone pathways winding past lemon groves.

You'll stay at a family-owned agriturismo and join optional activities like pasta and mozzarella-making classes. Rounded off with a boat tour to Capri and the opportunity to taste locally made grappa, needless to say the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's, if not Europe's, most iconic destinations.

Read on for Katy's take on Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo:

How did you find your tour leader?

One of our guides, Nigel, is an international mountain leader and a true expert. He knows the region inside out so knew all the local insights. We felt very safe and secure with him, particularly on some of the more remote hikes.

I also had the privilege of meeting our expert local guide, Satva, a leader for our Risorgimento tour, who has Italian hiking qualifications and is local to the region. I was very grateful that I got the chance to spend time with both of them and see each of their unique ways of leading the trip.

What were your fellow Explorers like?

There was 12 in our group, including myself, with an age range between 40s to late 70s. We were made up of casual and avid hikers, spread across solo travellers, couples and friends.

Some had travelled with Explore before while others were travelling with Explore for the first time - they liked the pricing and the fact that Explore includes airport transfers.

What's the food and drink like on the Amalfi Coast?

I loved the food. I'm vegan and felt very well catered for. On this Amalfi Coast walking tour we enjoyed tasty meals cooked by the family we stayed with at the agriturismo, and there was always lots of variety, from delicious farm-to-table vegetables and pastas to desserts.

There's lots of opportunities to try local food and drink here - you could quench your thirst with a freshly squeezed lemonade on the Walk of the Gods, and we also joined a local pizza-making demonstration.

Baskets of lemons and oranges are displayed for sale, accompanied by signs reading "FRESH ORANGE JUICE" and "FRESH LEMON JUICE." The fruit is arranged on a stone path.

What was your highlight of the trip?

All of the hikes were truly incredible, but the most breathtaking part of the trip for me was in Positano, after completing the Walk of the Gods. At the end of this hike, I swam out in the bay and looked back to see Positano in all its glory. It was a real pinch-me moment!

On our free day, we visited the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were fascinating places to visit to gain a deeper insight into the history of the region. Both cities were devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 but both have been almost perfectly preserved in volcanic ash; you can still see the villas, bakeries and everyday items, giving incredible insight into their way of living.

What's the accommodation like?

We stayed in an agriturismo, which is a type of family-owned property that's like a homestay but with enough privacy (each room had a private balcony!) and communal areas. Our agriturismo was rustic and stunning, situated amongst other charming buildings, plant-lined walls and overlooking a small farm.

You can watch the family harvest food for the day - it doesn't get more farm-to-table than that! Our hosts were tremendously friendly and made sure we were all well-catered for.

What was your favourite walk?

One 9km hike offered incredible views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. We continued onto the protected nature reserve of the Ferriere Valley, which was stunning; it was probably my favourite day of the trip.

We also hiked the 11km Walk of the Gods. We started in Bomerano and passed beautiful limestone cliffs and old stone farmhouses, which gave us a deep sense of history throughout the area. You descend into Positano with enough time to go swimming in the sea or enjoy treats in a local cafe.

Coastal buildings with terracotta roofs sit atop a cliff, overlooking a calm sea. A winding road traces the cliff's edge, while distant mountains rise under a partly cloudy sky.

How did you find the pace of this trip?

This trip is listed is Leisurely and Moderate. Using walking poles and wearing proper walking boots really makes a difference, as the terrain can be tough and tricky to navigate. There are some walking poles at the agriturismo you can borrow, but it's best to bring your own, if you can.

Describe this trip in one word?

Authentic. I'd seen tons of photos of the Amalfi Coast, but before I went on this tour I really didn't know what to expect. So I was positively surprised by the variety of terrains, and how different each hike was. You really got to see the Amalfi Coast from every possible angle: from above, below, at sea level... you were totally immersed. From the accommodation to the experiences, I felt I gained a true sense of life in the Amalfi Coast.

Katy's sustainability takeaways:

  • Enjoy farm-to-table food, from local lemonade stands to homecooked meals.
  • We used private transport instead of public transport, to reduce the negative impact for the people who live here.
  • The agriturismo air dry their sheets and towels. The Amalfi is a very clean destination, with little rubbish.
  • Clean drinking water is available throughout - so bring your reusable water bottle!
  • Learn from my mistakes and come prepared - I had to buy a sweater from the only shop in Bomerano! It's best to pack layers; the higher above sea level you go, the cooler it gets, especially in the shoulder seasons.
