Furore Fjord and Amalfi’s Hidden Swimming Spots

You likely picture the Amalfi Coast as a string of pastel towns clinging to cliffs overlooking the sea. Places like Positano and Amalfi draw the crowds for good reason – but beyond the well-trodden streets lies a quieter, more intimate side of the coastline.

Step away from the main towns, and the character of the Amalfi Coast shifts dramatically.

The coastline becomes wilder and more secretive. Narrow paths wind down the cliffs to secluded coves, where hidden beaches await. These lesser-known swimming spots offer a completely different experience, where you can experience a sense of stillness not found on the tourist trail.

Among these hidden gems, Furore Fjord stands out as the most iconic. Tucked between towering cliffs, it's totally invisible from the road above and captures the very essence of the Amalfi Coast’s hidden side.

Amalfi Coast hidden gems at a glance

  • Best hidden spot: Furore Fjord
  • Water type: Clear Mediterranean, deep coastal coves
  • Best time to swim: June to September
  • Quietest areas: Between Amalfi and Praiano
  • What to expect: Small coves, steps, pebbled beaches
  • Good to know: Many spots require walking access

A coastline shaped by cliffs and coves

The Amalfi Coast isn't defined by long stretches of sandy shoreline. Instead, it's carved by steep limestone cliffs that plunge into the sea. Over centuries, natural erosion has sculpted these cliffs into a series of inlets, coves and narrow valleys that open onto the water.

From above, the views are expansive. From below (at sea level) the landscape is enclosed and intimate. You can often find hidden swimming spots sheltered in the natural formation of the coastline.

In some places, these formations resemble fjords, where the sea cuts deeply into the land. Furore Fjord is the most famous example, but similar, smaller inlets can be found along quieter stretches of the coast.

Why there are so few sandy beaches

Unlike many Mediterranean destinations, sandy beaches are relatively rare along the Amalfi Coast. This comes down to geology. The cliffs are primarily made of limestone and other hard rock, which break down into pebbles rather than fine sand.

The steep gradient of the coastline also means there's not much space for sediment to build up. Waves tend to wash away finer material, leaving behind pebble beaches and rocky shorelines.

While this might sound less appealing at first, it's part of what makes the region so distinctive. The absence of wide, accessible beaches keeps many areas quieter. It also means these little beaches are more exciting to discover and reach – you have to venture beyond the obvious, but your rewarded with a little haven all of your own.

Amalfi’s most iconic hidden swimming spot

What is Furore Fjord?

Furore Fjord, known locally as Fiordo di Furore, is a narrow inlet carved deep into the cliffs between Amalfi and Praiano. A small beach sits at the base, framed by towering rock walls that create a dramatic, almost cinematic setting.

High above, a bridge carries the coastal road across the gorge, offering a striking contrast between the busy route above and the hidden world below. This unique combination of natural beauty and architectural drama has made the fjord one of the most photographed locations on the Amalfi Coast.

Despite its popularity in images, the fjord itself remains surprisingly secluded when you visit in person.

Why it feels hidden

One of the most remarkable things about Furore Fjord is how easily it can be missed. From the road above, there's little indication of what lies below. No sweeping beach views, no obvious access points, just a hint of a gorge cutting into the cliffs.

To reach the water, you have to descend a series of steps that wind down into the inlet. This short but steep journey acts as a natural filter – not many people make the effort to reach the it compared to more accessible beaches.

Once you arrive, the space feels enclosed and protected. The cliffs rise on either side, blocking out much of the outside world. Even during busier periods, the fjord retains a sense of calm that is rare along the coast.

What to expect when visiting Furore Fjord

The beach at Furore Fjord is small and pebbled, with just enough space to settle in and enjoy the surroundings. The water is deep, clear and perfect for swimming.

Because the cliffs cast long shadows, the water here tends to be cooler than at the more open beaches, making it a refreshing spot for hot summer days.

Swimming here is different from other parts of the coast. The depth of the water and the enclosed setting create a lovely feeling of immersion.

Best time of day to visit

Timing makes a big difference when visiting Furore Fjord. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to experience it at its quietest.

Arriving early allows you to enjoy the stillness before the day-trippers arrive. In the late afternoon, the light softens, and many visitors begin to leave, restoring a sense of tranquility.

Midday tends to be the busiest period, especially during peak summer months. If you’re looking for a more peaceful experience, it’s worth planning your visit around these quieter windows.

Amalfi’s lesser-known swimming spots

While Furore Fjord is the standout, it's far from the only hidden swimming spot on the Amalfi Coast. Venture a little further, and you’ll find a series of lesser-known coves and beaches.

Marina di Praia

Marina di Praia is a narrow beach tucked between cliffs, offering a more accessible alternative to Furore. The cove is framed by dramatic rock formations, creating a sheltered environment with calm waters.

Unlike some of the more remote spots, Marina di Praia is relatively easy to reach, making it a good option if you want a balance between convenience and atmosphere. Despite this, it retains a quieter feel compared to the main beaches in larger towns.

The setting is particularly striking in the evening, when the light fades and the cliffs cast long shadows across the water.

Fiordo di Crapolla

For those willing to go further off the beaten path, Fiordo di Crapolla offers a truly remote experience. Reaching it involves descending a long stone stairway—an effort that keeps visitor numbers low and preserves its sense of isolation.

At the bottom, you’ll find a small, rugged inlet with clear water and a raw, untouched feel. Nearby, the ruins of a small abbey add a layer of history to the landscape, hinting at the area’s past.

This is not a place for a quick visit. It rewards those who take their time, offering a sense of escape that is increasingly rare along popular coastlines.

Spiaggia di Castiglione

Located near Ravello, Spiaggia di Castiglione combines dramatic access with stunning views. A steep staircase leads down to the beach, opening up to one of the most scenic perspectives on the coast.

Although it is closer to well-known areas, it remains less crowded than the main beach in Amalfi town. The combination of easier access and striking surroundings makes it a great middle ground for travellers looking to explore beyond the obvious.

The beach itself is small and pebbled, with clear water that is ideal for swimming and cooling off after the descent.

Why exploring beyond the main towns changes the experience

Staying within the main towns of the Amalfi Coast offers convenience, culture, and iconic views, but it only tells part of the story.

The true character of the coastline reveals itself when you step away from these hubs and begin to explore on foot. The act of walking (whether along coastal paths or down hidden stairways) becomes part of the experience. Each turn brings a new perspective, each descent leads to a new discovery.

These quieter spots offer more than just a place to swim. They provide a sense of connection to the landscape, a slower pace, and a chance to experience the Amalfi Coast in a more personal way.

As one traveller described in our Amalfi walking tour interview: “It’s the moments between the landmarks that stay with you, the hidden coves, the quiet paths, the feeling of having a place almost to yourself.”

Exploring beyond the main towns transforms your visit from sightseeing into something even more immersive. It turns the coastline into something you get to experience, rather than just see from above.
