High on many people’s ‘must visit’ lists is at least one experience of Africa: from viewing the Great Migration in Tanzania, to ascending Table Mountain or Mount Toubkal, or punting a graceful mokoro through Botswana’s verdant Okavango Delta.
Africa’s vast and varied expanse can be challenging to some travellers, and while our group holidays take the stress out of your trip, if you’re looking to book the trip of a lifetime our Tailormade holidays are the ultimate way to experience Africa. Our knowledgeable travel experts can tailor one of our existing itineraries or start from scratch to create a bespoke trip that’s personal to you from start to finish. You can choose where and when you want to go and how you want to get there, leaving all the finer details to us to arrange for you.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, making a travel dream come true or simply looking to plan a trip that ticks all of the boxes, here are a few reasons why our Tailormade trips to Africa offer the holiday of a lifetime.
The ultimate safari destination
Tanzania’s safari parks offer some of the best game viewing in Africa, as the setting of the Great Migration in the Serengeti and home to some of the densest-known population of lions. A tailor-made holiday to Tanzania could see you exploring the slopes of Kilimanjaro, searching for elephants in Tarangire National Park, spotting tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara or relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar – or a combination of experiences. Our group trips to Tanzania avoid peak times like the Great Migration to ensure the most competitive prices, so travelling tailor-made offers the chance to see the spectacle for yourself. Our guides in Tanzania offer a wealth of information and can seek out the most elusive of big cats, and after your safari holiday there’s nothing like a beach break to ensure maximum relaxation before you fly home. But don’t just take our word for it: Explore customer Wendy C left us this review after her tailor-made trip to Tanzania:
“…A fabulous package. We saw the Big Five and so much more. Such an amazing experience, a beautiful country and each lodge/camp was special in its own way. Ngorongoro Crater was a particular highlight and all rounded off with chilling out in Zanzibar.”
Experiences and exclusivity
If you’re looking for the best of the best you’ll find it in Botswana – Africa’s top destination for luxury safaris. Botswana’s lodges and camps are small and scattered, offering an intimate safari experience so you’ll have vast expanses of the country virtually all to yourself. Because of this, prices are usually higher but for your higher spend you’ll find yourself in remote parks teeming with wildlife (rather than safari vehicles) and a choice of alternative safari options such as mokoro journeys and mobile camping, alfresco dining and nature walks. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Botswana’s history and culture is by spending a night in a San bushmen’s’ village, learning about their customs and stories of their lands. Botswana’s infrastructure is surprisingly robust, and much of its development is given over to sustainable sources. Lots of camps and lodges make use of recycled metal like tin cans in the building of accommodation, though this doesn’t mean they’re basic: Botswana is also home to some of the most staggeringly deluxe lodges in Africa, with infinity pools overlooking watering holes and private boats offering tours of the delta. Our pick would be a night (or two) spent under the stars at Khwai Private Reserve, staying in a skybed that overlooks a busy waterhole often frequented by elephants.

New trips to the Rainbow Nation
South Africa is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Africa, and we’re excited to be adding it to our Tailormade collection in the upcoming months. South Africa’s diverse landscapes, vast distances and iconic landmarks make it the ideal choice for tailor-made holidays, where you can let us take care of all the details like planning transfers and finding the perfect accommodation, so that you can sit back and enjoy your trip. Some of the experiences you can expect include sampling wines in the vineyards of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch and spotting wildlife in Kruger National Park. You could drive the wildflower-studded coastal roads of the Garden Route at your own pace, or board the Blue Train for the most luxurious way to travel between Cape Town and Pretoria. The Mother City, as Cape Town is known, is the ideal place to start or end a trip (with direct flights and little time difference meaning no jet lag) – the only hard part is fitting all the sights into one trip.

Short on flight time, big on culture
In the far north of Africa, sharing a Mediterranean coastline with Spain, Italy and Greece, is Morocco. Its shared shores and short flight times are about the only thing Morocco has in common with its European neighbours, its cuisine, culture and landscape varying from arid desert to the peaks of the High Atlas. Morocco is also a challenging country to visit, with chaotic traffic, clamouring cities and remote outposts creating a heady mix of elements to demand the attention. In Morocco it pays to have robust travel plans, with experienced drivers and guides able to take the stress out of lengthy transfers, navigating labyrinthine medina streets and translating with ease. If you’ve always dreamed of haggling over rugs in Fes and sipping a sweet mint tea as the sun sets over Djemaa el-Fnaa, consider a tailor-made trip. Not only will you have the backup of Explore’s 35-year history of planning adventure trips, but also the chance to completely personalise your holiday to your requirements – whether you’re looking to book a short break to Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains or take an in-depth discovery tour of the whole country.
