We’re pleased to tell you that Peru
is to introduce South America’s first luxury sleeper train in spring 2017. Currently, only available as a day trip from Cusco to Puno (and vice versa) it will be possible to travel overnight between these cities. Or you can really indulge and spend two nights aboard this beautiful train on a journey from Cusco to Puno, before ending in Arequipa. Alternatively, you can join the train in Arequipa and it will follow the same route as it returns to Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu.
Our Senior Regional Specialist, Sarah Slocomb, travelled to Peru and would highly recommend travelling on the train. She explains, “I’m an outdoors girl myself and so the Sacred Valley was one of the places I was looking forward to the most when I travelled to Peru. It didn’t disappoint! Many people overlook the Sacred Valley and opt to stay in Cusco but, if time allows, spend a few nights here in the valley as there is something for everyone.
“The valley itself is simply beautiful; fertile lands following the meandering Urubamba river, dotted with Inca sites and with a backdrop of the Andean mountains. Breathtaking! You can spend your days browsing for local handicrafts in the bustling Pisac market, visiting a local village and the Maras salt mines, or exploring some of the Inca sites; the agricultural terraces at Maray and the ruins of Ollantaytambo were my personal favourites. For the more active you can also enjoy horse riding or whitewater rafting on the Urubamba river.
“Lastly, if like me you’re a real foodie then I highly recommend lunch at Wayra Lodge. You can enjoy a Peruvian barbeque style buffet on the outdoor terrace, made up of tasty local produce, and finish the experience off by watching a Peruvian Paso horse demonstration. Perfect!”
