Top destinations for Spring walking

We've spoken to our walking and trekking experts at Explore and asked to them to choose their favourite places to go walking this Spring. Find out what they said below.

Italy

May is known as the ‘Month of Roses’ in Italy and there’s an abundance of flora all sorts to be enjoyed on countryside trails throughout the spring, from March onwards. The weather is pleasantly warm but not too hot – perfect for walking. The food is always great in Italy but in spring many types of vegetables and other produce start to ripen with a widening array of mouth-watering dishes on offer.

Walking by the Italian Lakes in Spring you can enjoy sunny days by the lake but still appreciate the beautiful views of the snow-clad Alps; whilst in Sicily, Mount Etna will likely still be wearing her ‘white dress’ as the locals like to refer to the snow dusted crater. Spring is also a great time for hiking on the Amalfi and Cinque Terre coasts before they get too busy with visitors, whilst down in the ‘ heel’ of Italy, Puglia enjoys daytime temperatures in the 20’s.

Nepal

Spring is the best time to trek in Nepal for lovers of flora and fauna. As the days lengthen and the sun warms the mountain air, the Himalaya burst into bloom. You’ll trek through forests of giant Rhododendron trees, their trunks covered in parasitic plants including a multitude of species of orchid. The flowers attract many varieties of wildlife, and bird watchers are in for a treat as spring is the main time for migration, with winter visitors from Siberia departing Nepal and summer visitors arriving to breed.

You can enjoy a number of major festivals in Nepal in the spring. On Maha Shivaratri, thousands of dreadlocked Sadhus gather in Pashupatinath to celebrate the birthday of Lord Shiva whilst during Holi, famously known as the ‘festival of colours’, people throw coloured powders over each other to mark the victory of good over evil.

Greek Islands & Cyprus

The Greek islands are beautiful in Spring time, as wild flowers adorn the mountain trails and white almond blossoms brighten the hillsides. Soak up the warmth of the sun as you walk through gorges, along coastal paths and hidden trails. The Grecians will welcome you with open arms, and on Evia you will be made to feel at home whilst staying board a traditional Greek Caique.

Walking in Cyprus in spring is an ideal time to appreciate this unspoilt island. Steeped in mythology you can discover Crusader castles in the Besparmark mountains and the ‘UNESCO World Heritage Tombs of Kings’ site in Paphos whilst enjoying clear skies and far reaching views.

Spain

Travel to Spain in spring before the temperatures and tourist numbers start to rise. You can enjoy blue skies, beautiful wildflowers and trails that are not over crowded.  Combine beautiful walks with plentiful tapas and wine tasting and gain an appreciation of the variety of cuisine and flavours that Spain offers. In spring the home-grown produce is at starting to flourish with more choice available and vineyards open for tastings.

For many following the legendary pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain is a one off experience. Walking the route in spring the trail will be less crowded, with more restaurant choices and hotel availability. Andalucía in southern Spain comes alive in April when fiesta season begins, with each town putting on a celebration and procession - these vibrant occasions are sure to be memorable.

Morocco

Head up to the Atlas Mountains in June for some cooler, fresher air and magnificent views of the Moroccan mountain ranges. The landscapes should still be green and lush after the spring rains and pleasant daytime temperatures make for perfect walking conditions. Explore the foothills of the beautiful High Atlas Mountains, or take on a challenge with a rewarding ascent of Mount Toubkal.
