1. Italy

Why not head to the Tuscany for the school summer holidays? Italy is perfect for summer, with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. Our fantastic Family Tuscan Active Adventure is a week packed full of fun activities. Stay in an agriturismo - a farmhouse run by a local family - which sits in the mountains where it’s a cooler, more comfortable temperature than the coast, and with fewer tourists. You and the kids will be kept busy with kayaking, trekking, cycling and canyoning, to name but a few of the activities.

2. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia

Estonia benefits from comfortable summer temperatures ranging from around 17-22°c, making it an ideal destination for cycling. Hop on a bike on our Cycling the Baltic States trip and you’ll journey through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. We make the most of the warmer weather as we spend each day outdoors and close to nature - with varied rides through forests, past lagoons and on the coast with chances to swim.

3. South Africa

Head to the coast of South Africa in August and there are extraordinary experiences to be had both on land and at sea. Enjoy South Africa’s Garden Route with us, and combine wildlife watching with wine-tasting and incredible scenery. August is a good time for whale watching from the shore, or on an optional boat trip, as southern right, Bryde's and humpback whales visit the coastal waters. We also visit Tsitsikamma National Park, a beautiful coastal park, where you can choose from walking, kayaking or zip-lining. And to top it all off, go on a game drive at Addo National Park, one of the best places to see elephants in the world, with a whopping 600 elephants living in the park. August is a great month to visit as it’s the dry season and is typically quieter.

4. Greece

Shimmering blue waters, sunny skies and delicious food – what could be better for a holiday in August? Greece is a tourist hotspot in the summer, but we’ve got a great way to enjoy it away from the crowds. Join our Family Caique Cruise and you’ll get to enjoy a week on a traditional Greek sailing boat, waking up to a new view of the Mediterranean every morning. It’s also the best way to enjoy the hot climate, as there are plenty of opportunities to drop anchor and jump in for a swim to cool off. We cruise around the island of Evia, one of the quieter islands, which has been voted in National Geographic’s Top 10 sailing cruises in the world.

5. Peru

August is the dry season in Peru and temperatures are warm. This makes it a great time of year to hike the Inca Trail. June and July are generally the most popular months to visit so August can be slightly quieter on the trail, and there'll be fewer crowds when you reach majestic Machu Picchu. As well as the trek itself we'll visit colourful markets and explore the cobbled streets of Cusco. Plus, why not extend your trip with a stay in the Amazon rainforest? It’s the low-water season, when it’s generally warmer and has the lowest amount of rain.

6. Croatia

Searching for a warm and sunny destination to take the family during the summer holidays? Croatia’s beaches, rivers and gorges make the ultimate adventure playground. On our Family Croatian Active Adventure we take on rapids with white water rafting, jump from waterfalls on a canyoning excursion and kayak along rivers.

7. India

August in India is very hot and very rainy, as it’s the middle of the monsoon season. However, you can escape the heat and rain by visiting Ladakh in the very north of the country, in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, on our Little Tibet tour. Being a high altitude mountain plateau, Ladakh is much cooler than the plains and therefore summer is a great time to go. If you want to experience stunning mountain views and learn more about local culture and religions, this tour is for you. Visit at the right time in August and you may catch the Daktok Festival, where you will get to watch Buddhist monks perform their sacred chham, a traditional masked dance to ward off evil spirits.

8. Botswana

August is in winter in Botswana and that means very little rain, warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings. The dry season also means that the wildlife congregates around waterholes, making it a perfect time to go on safari game drives. Explore Botswana on our Botswana Lodge Safari tour and you’ll stay in premium lodges. The tour includes lots of game drives and a stay on a houseboat in the Okavango Delta Panhandle, a prime location for seeing Botswana’s birdlife.

9. Canada

August is peak season for hiking in Canada, with long daylight hours and little rain. Explore the breath-taking views of Western Canada on our Walking in the Rockies tour, which features several hikes in spectacular national parks. On this adventure we spend eight nights camping in the forests, where you'll get to sit around the campfire and get a fantastic view of the night sky away from light pollution. On all of the hikes you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over mountains, lakes and glaciers.

10. Vietnam

The best time to go to Vietnam depends on the area you’re going to. August sits within the dry season on the central coast, and it is typically one of the warmest months. In the south of Vietnam it’s the rainy season, although this usually means short, sharp showers, so it’s no reason not to travel. Overall, August is much quieter with fewer tourists, making it a good time to travel here. Our Inside Vietnam tour visits the ancient captial of Hue and the charming trade town of Hoi An on the central coast. It also includes a homestay on the Mekong Delta, giving you the opportunity to stay with a local family and experience community life.
