Costa Rica is where family adventures come to life. With its incredible biodiversity (over 5% of the world's total!), gentle thrills and a culture that welcomes you like family, it's the perfect blend of excitement and safety.

From lush rainforests to pristine beaches, the country’s well-developed infrastructure makes exploring easy and stress-free. Kids will love spotting sloths and toucans, while parents can relax knowing Costa Rica boasts one of the best safety records in Central America.

Costa Rica at a glance:

Thinking about a family adventure to Costa Rica? We don't blame you. Here’s why Costa Rica ticks all the boxes:

  • Wildlife every day: Spot sloths, howler monkeys, toucans, and even resplendent quetzals on our rainforest walks and boat trips.
  • Adventure that kids will love: Try zip-lining through the canopy, gentle white-water rafting, chocolate-making workshops, and plenty of beach time. This trip is perfectly suited for younger years and teenagers, because of the range of adventures and experiences.
  • Easy family logistics: Costa Rica is a small country, so that means short travel hops, plus experienced leaders and family-friendly lodges to make everything stress-free.
  • When to Go: Costa Rica's dry season runs roughly December to April; for turtle nesting in Tortuguero, aim for July to October. Good to know: we run special green turtle nesting season departure dates of this trip!

Plan your trip: Take a look at our Family Costa Rica Rainforest and Wildlife Adventure for full itinerary details, accommodation types and age suitability (from 7+).

Wildlife you can actually see

Costa Rica is a living classroom for nature lovers. Every day brings chances to spot sloths draped across tree branches, howler monkeys calling from the canopy, and a kaleidoscope of birdlife - think toucans, scarlet macaws, and the dazzling resplendent quetzal.

For families, wildlife encounters aren’t just lucky; they’re built into the experience. Nature trail walks through Mirador del Silencio Reserve reveal hidden creatures, while boat safaris in Tortuguero National Park make sightings effortless for kids, gliding past riverbanks where caimans bask and herons hunt.

From tiny poison-dart frogs to giant iguanas, Costa Rica’s biodiversity is unmatched, and the thrill of spotting animals in their natural habitat is something children never forget.

Adventure at the right level

Costa Rica is the perfect playground for families who love a mix of excitement and relaxation:

  • Zip-lining in Monteverde (optional activity) lets thrill-seekers soar above the cloud forest.
  • White-water rafting offers unforgettable "I can't believe I'm doing this" moments for younger adventurers and teenagers alike.
  • Canopy walks through lush treetops reveal a world of wildlife at eye level, making exploration safe and magical for all ages.
  • Beach days on golden shores are ideal for swimming, sitting back and sunset strolls.

We've perfected the balance of high-energy activities and laid-back moments to ensure everyone stays happy and engaged. After all, a trip to Costa Rica will see you experience the extremes - but ultimately, it’s about creating unforgettable family memories in nature’s most spectacular setting.

Beaches and national parks in one trip

Imagine passing through fertile tropical farmlands while taking in the famous Arenal Volcano towering over you. A local guide leading you along forest trails and coastal pathways in Corcovado National Park. Listening to howler monkeys deep in Tortuguero National Park. And then, there are Costa Rica's beaches. There's plenty of free time on Dominical Beach, located between Manuel Antonio and the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific Coast. Watch surfers rip through the waves, enjoy some chill-out time on the beach and watch the sunset from the coast.

This unique combination – volcanoes, rainforests, beaches – creates an itinerary that’s as thrilling as it is relaxing!

Fun and educational

Costa Rica turns family fun into hands-on learning. Kids can discover the secrets of the world's favourite sweet treat on a chocolate tour in La Tirimbina. Conservation chats with local experts bring wildlife protection to life, while guided nature walks reveal the secrets of rainforests – spotting sloths, frogs, and exotic birds along the way. These interactive experiences blends play with purpose so every family member leaves having learned something new.

First-hand: what it's really like on Explore's family tour

What's the group dynamic like?

"Going with other families is a huge bonus, in my opinion. My son Ollie is 12 and there were three other boys aged 10, 12 and 15. They all had an obsession with football and so instantly bonded. Without doubt, it made the holiday more fun for Ollie. Explore attract like-minded, adventure seeking people, so the chances are you’ll meet a great bunch."

What's the pace like?

"If you fancy a holiday that connects your kids to the natural world, ignites their thirst for adventure, enriches their lives and gives them little time to go onto their iPads and phones then this is the holiday for you. You may not come back rested but you’ll definitely come back rejuvenated, refreshed and with a camera full of amazing memories."

When to go with kids?

Everyone will tell you that Costa Rica is a year-round destination, but timing really matters:

  • The dry season (December-April): Offers plenty of sunshine - ideal for beaches and outdoor fun- though it’s busier and pricier. One of the departure dates for our Costa Rica family tour operates in March, during the dry season.
  • The green season (May–November): Also known as the rainy season, but it's a time of lush landscapes and incredible wildlife encounters. It’s also prime time for unique experiences like turtle nesting in Tortuguero (July-August). Most of our Costa Rica family tours operate during this green season, in July, August, October and December. We operate green turtle nesting season departure dates between July and August - see the trip page for date breakdowns.

Responsible wildlife travel with kids

Costa Rica’s wildlife is magical – but it’s vital to protect it:

  • Observe animals from a distance, and never feed them
  • Always stick to marked trails
  • Support local guides who share conservation knowledge and choose tours that align with sustainability values

These simple steps help preserve habitats and ensure encounters are safe for both wildlife and families. Learn more about our commitment to responsible travel on our Sustainability page.
