Germany is a cycle-friendly culture with a wealth of options to explore on two wheels for all abilities. From the lakes and snow peaks of the Bavarian Alps, down important river valleys such as the Danube, Elbe and Rhine, across forested uplands to the North Sea; Germany has a well-developed cycle network to help you enjoy all there is to offer.

Castles, picturesque villages, lakes and rivers, forested nature reserves, alpine scenery, excellent beer and fine white wines await the cyclist. Germany has long been one of Europe’s most influential contributors with a rich cultural and political history that has produced many important philosophers, music composers, scientists and inventors.

Thanks to its location and porous borders, a cycling holiday in Germany can easily be combined with the surrounding countries and many bike routes follow the course of a river across borders.

The River Danube, flowing from the Black Forest Mountains to the Black Sea in Romania, is the second largest in Europe after the Volga. It is also one of the most iconic and famous cycle routes passing through numerous historical cities, four central European capitals and ten countries. It once formed a long-standing frontier for the Roman Empire. At nearly 3000 kilometres in length, you can focus on the cycling sections that most interest you, returning time and again for a different experience. In Germany you could ride along the banks of the Danube from Ulm to Passau through Regensburg. From Passau you can cycle past imposing castles, glorious abbeys and the wine growing region of Wachau to Vienna in Austria.

The River Elbe cycle route flows from Prague in the Czech Republic through the sandstone canyons of ‘Saxon Switzerland’, past vineyards, Baroque palaces and castles to Meissen and on to Dresden. The River Inn bike route starts at Innsbruck, in Austria, and flows down through Bavaria to meet the Danube in Passau.

Bavaria and the Tyrol are renowned for mountain scenery and hospitality. The Romantik Strasse is a cycle route that explores castles and lakes with an Alpine backdrop. Cycling around Lake Constance you can enjoy the Alpine setting in Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

For many years the Germans have enjoyed bike trips as a healthy and green holiday. There are many other possible itineraries for a cycling holiday in Germany with such a well-established network of bike routes across the land as a result of this interest in and positive attitude towards cycle tourism.
