The relatively small territory of modern day Hungary is a shadow of its former self and belies its historical importance and influence as one of Europe’s great powers. On a cycling adventure in Hungary you can discover this rich history and proud culture. Hungary is a country largely dominated by plains, rivers and lakes which makes a lot of the cycling options suitable for all levels with a small range of the Carpathian Mountains to the north and the very eastern end of the Alps in the west.

Thanks to its strategic location, a cycling holiday in Hungary can easily be combined with the surrounding countries in particular by following the course of the River Danube across borders.

The River Danube is Europe’s second largest river and has become one of the most iconic and famous cycle routes passing through numerous historical cities, four central European capitals and ten countries. A classic section of the Danube to cycle is from Vienna in Austria to Budapest in Hungary, passing through Bratislava in Slovakia. You can pedal through places of historic importance and natural beauty with the birding wetlands of Szigetkoz, the Baroque old town squares of Gyor, the Roman fort of Kelemantia and discover the highlight of Esztergom – known as the Hungarian Rome. You will end your ride in the cultural capital of Budapest.

Located in the west, Lake Balaton is a massive body of shallow water and is well suited for a leisurely cycle holiday. You can cycle along dedicated cycle paths and quiet country lanes through a peaceful and unspoilt countryside, have a dip in the balmy waters and try the locally-made wine. Further east you can cycle around the old spa town of Heviz and rest your legs in the second largest thermal lake in the world.

A bicycle holiday in Hungary is sure to feature the peaceful natural environment, historic sites dating from Roman to modern times and a warm welcome. Many visitors don’t venture beyond the vibrant capital of Budapest but it is well worth your while.
