A classic image of road cycling is on racing bikes along famous routes such as the Tour de France with a peloton and presenting a physical challenge with gruelling ascents, exhilarating descents and sprint finishes. However, not all road cycling holidays are about the distance, challenge and equipment. Explore organises many cycle routes around the world on tarmac along quiet backroads between traditional villages, through beautiful scenery and to culturally important world heritage sites.

The degree of physical challenge varies from easy grade rides through to more challenging cycle routes and it is therefore possible to choose the tour to suit your fitness level. Depending on local conditions and the best route to take, a certain proportion of the cycling could be on gravel tracks or dirt roads, and this is summarised on a tour by tour basis in the route and terrain description of the tour notes.

A support vehicle accompanies the majority of the road cycling holidays. It is usually out of sight either ahead of the group or following from a distance behind. Apart from offering a safety net to anybody unable to complete a section of cycling it also provides a safe place to leave your day to day possessions that you do not want to carry on the bike. On certain biking tours, particularly those in cycling in France and cycling in Spain, the tour leader drives the support vehicle while the group follow cycle route notes. In these cases the support vehicle will regularly meet the group at certain points along the route to check on progress and assist with any problems. Again this is described in more detail on the tour notes.

With the combination of scenery, local culture, history and interesting sites an active holiday on two wheels can be a really rewarding way to discover a country. Destinations are very varied from the UK, throughout Europe and to far flung places and exotic places such as Japan, Nicaragua or cycling in Cuba.
