Destinations Africa Tanzania Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Go on a safari holiday to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area to see Africa’s veritable Garden of Eden, a hive of activity. A visit to the crater is the main draw, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the largest intact caldera in the world, containing everything necessary for the 30000 animals that inhabit the crater floor to exist and thrive. The crater floor is mainly grassy plain, interspersed with a few tracts of sturdy woodland. There are both freshwater and brackish lakes, and the main water source is Lake Migadi in the centre of the crater, a soda lake that attracts flocks of pink-winged flamingos and plenty of contented hippos who remain partially submerged during the day and graze on grass at night. The views from the rim overlooking Ngorongoro Crater are sensational, and on a game drive or Tailormade walking safari you’ll be able to pick out the wildlife as dots on the crater floor.
Around half of the animal population are zebra and wildebeest which you are highly likely to see on an Explore safari. Unlike those in the neighbouring Serengeti, these populations do not need to migrate, thanks to the permanent supply of water and grass through both the wet and the dry seasons. The animals are quite used to visitors, it's not unusual on Explore’s Serengeti Lodge Safari for a pride of lions to amble over and flop down in the shade of a vehicle. The crater's elephants are mostly old bulls with giant tusks; the females and calves prefer the forested highlands on the crater rim and only rarely venture down into the grasslands. There is also a good chance of seeing the Big Five – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant.
Families take away lifelong memories from Explore’s Family Serengeti, Safari and Zanzibar holiday, with time to relax on the beach after safari. Or why not take to two-wheels on Explore’s Cycle Tanzania - Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro which also takes in safaris in Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks.
